Thanks for the comments Crimson, Kamala, Daytondave and Pariah. Snuka vs. Race sounds good, I may have to look into that. I lucked out with Dutch Savage vs. Fritz Von Goering as the DDQ roll was a perfect set-up for the Coal Miner's Glove Match. Next up is action from the GWA with history being made...
LOW Global Wrestling Association - 02 World Arena - Berlin, Germany (Card #856)
1) Danny Doring & Amish Roadkill defeated Ivan Koloff & Boris Zhukov by DQ:
The opening match of an all-star card saw the popular ASW tag team of Danny Doring & Amish Roadkill take on the “Russian Bear” Ivan Koloff & Boris Zhukov, the latter having recently made his debut in the GWA. Despite their inexperience as a team it was Koloff and Zhukov dominating the action for a good stretch including Koloff scoring near falls with the legdrop and falling face slam. Roadkill was very impressive during his time in and late in the match it was Doring scoring a big near fall on Koloff with a flying bodypress from the top rope. In the end it was a bloody Doring who was assaulted by Koloff on the outside as he was tossed head first into the ring post resulting in a snake eyes disqualification. Koloff and Zhukov dominated the post-match action and left both Roadkill and the bloody Doring lying. It was later learned that Doring and Roadkill challenged Koloff and Zhukov to a rematch on the next edition of LOW All-Star Wrestling (Card #861), a challenged which was accepted by the Russian team.
2) Val Venis defeated Nick Bockwinkel by DQ:
A second straight technical decision marred this match between Nick Bockwinkel, a former two-time LOW World Heavyweight champion, and Val Venis. The two had a great bout exchanging holds and counter holds throughout. Bockwinkel stunned Venis with a piledriver and wore him down with the abdominal stretch. Venis came back with a powerslam and Russian legsweep putting Bockwinkel on the defense. Things got tense when they battled out onto the floor and Bockwinkel drew a snake eyes disqualification when his he Venis with a chair shot across the back. The fans jeered the decision as the “Big Valbowski” escaped with a big victory.
3) Fabulous Kangaroos defeated Super Crazy & Halcon Oro:
The first clean decision of the night came in this match between Super Crazy & Halcon Oro and the Fabulous Kangaroos (Al Costello & Roy Heffernan, with Wild Red Berry). Crazy and Oro have been quickly rising up the tag team ranks but they faced a roadblock here in the former two-time LOW World tag team champions. Early action saw Crazy score a two count on Costello with the Moonsault. The Kangaroos took over on Oro for an extended stretch until he countered Heffernan on the top rope with a superplex and followed with the Caida de Muerte. Crazy tagged back in and had control until Heffernan deflected a low dropkick. The Kangaroos went to work on Crazy who wound up being busted open after forearm smashes by Costello. He was also trapped in both the Step Over Toehold by Heffernan and the Marble Bor Leglock by Costello. Oro tried to make the save on the latter but Costello fended him off and hit an Aussie Suplex on Crazy to score the pin.
4) The French Angel defeated The Mountie:
This special challenge match saw The French Angel looking for revenge as he took on The Mountie. It was The Mountie who caused the Angel to lose a Lumberjack Match to Exotic Adrian Street on the last GWA card. The Angel tore into The Mountie from the opening bell battering him in and out of the ring. He was narrowly able to avoid being disqualified as he battered The Mountie on the floor much to the delight of the fans. The Mountie turned the tables with a counter out of the corner and hit the dropkick and flying elbow ram. He attempted to go on an offensive but The Angel cut him off and trapped him in the Bearhug. The Mountie fought out of it but The Angel would net let up his attack. He hit the fearsome headbutt and menacing palm strikes before again trapping The Mountie in the Bearhug. This time there was no escape and The Mountie conceded the match giving The Angel the victory via submission.
5) Giant Bernard & Dan Spivey defeated Finlay & David Taylor by Count Out:
This rematch from the last GWA card saw the “Belfast Bruiser” Finlay & David Taylor take on the titanic tag team of Giant Bernard & “Dangerous” Dan Spivey. That first match went to Finlay and Taylor via disqualification so Bernard and Spivey were looking to even it up here. This was a stiff and brutal battle that saw all four men take plenty of punishment. There were two near falls in the match with Bernard scoring one on Finlay with the running avalanche and Finlay returning the favor with the sitdown splash. Spivey was dominant during his time in executing such moves as the DDT and backbreaker with authority. Taylor was equally impressive as he caught the larger Spivey with a gorilla press gutbuster. The rough battle ended up on the floor where Taylor was counted out after Spivey laid him out with the Power Bomb. It was a revenge win for Bernard and Spivey but Finlay and Taylor will surely be back to fight again.
6) Jon Moxley defeated Exotic Adrian Street by Count Out:
The in-ring GWA debut for Jon Moxley saw the eccentric star take the fight to Exotic Adrian Street, with his valet Miss Linda, much like he did when he interfered in the Lumberjack Match between Street and The French Angel in Toronto. Street jumped Moxley at ringside getting this match off to a wild start. That proved to be a big mistake as Moxley quickly turned the tables and assaulted Street in and out of the ring. He hit the Double Arm DDT early for a big near fall and then nearly had Street pinned after a superplex but Miss Linda distracted the referee. Moxley didn’t let that phase him, however, and he kept up his attack. It went to the floor where Moxley sent Street over the guard rail and continued his attack. Miss Linda got involved scratching the back of Moxley as Street retreated down the aisle. Moxley turned to her but she managed to escape in the nick of time. Moxley then rolled back inside and it was a second straight count out decision ending a wild match. The crowd cheered the victorious Moxley as he returned to the locker room.
7) Steve Williams & Terry Gordy defeated New Age Outlaws:
This feature attraction saw the New Age Outlaws (B.G. James & Kip James) take on the Miracle Violence Connection (Steve “Dr. Death” Williams & Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy) in what was the final appearance for the MVC in the GWA. It was learned recently that Gordy and Williams have signed exclusive contracts with Kings Road United in Japan and the Outlaws stepped up challenging them for their final match in the GWA. Both teams looked great in this back and forth battle which saw the Outlaws nearly pull off a huge victory when Kip caught Gordy with a counter sunset flip off the ropes. Gordy battled back and hit the Bamm Bamm Slam on Kip to set up “Doc” wearing him down with a bearhug. Williams nearly put this one away when he hit the Oklahoma Stampede on B.G. who impressively kicked out just before the three count. B.G. took the fight to both “Doc” and Gordy including striking with the James Gang Pounce and teaming with Kip on the double team Hot Shot. Gordy turned things around late and nailed B.G. with a running lariat before executing the Oriental Spike to score the pin. The crowd cheered the win for the MVC and afterward as all four men shook hands in a show of respect. It was a fitting exit from the GWA for one of the most formidable tag teams in all of LOW.
8) LOW World Heavyweight title: George Hackenschmidt defeated Lou Thesz to win the title:
The main event saw Lou Thesz put the LOW World Heavyweight title on the line against the “Russian Lion” George Hackenschmidt. The feared master of the Russian Bearhug is himself a former LOW World Heavyweight champion having held the belt three years ago (Card# 525-545) and there is no doubt that he was looking to put Thesz away and win the gold for a second time. Both men were at the top of their game in this match trading holds and counters throughout. Thesz scored a submission chance early when he trapped Hackenschmidt in a hammerlock but it was broken up in the ropes. Thesz followed with a released power bomb and locked on the STF to keep the advantage. Hackenschmidt then locked on the Russian Bearhug going for the submission but Thesz was able to fight out of it. There were several battles on the outside where Hackenschmidt held the upper hand. Back inside he again went to the Russian Bearhug but Thesz refused to tap out. Thesz came back with an airplane spin and trapped Hackenschmidt in the double wristlock for another submission chance. The crowd was at a fever pitch going into the home stretch where Thesz was dumped over the ropes and nearly counted out of the ring. The champion showed great fire and determination returning to battle but Hackenschmidt seized control and again locked on the Russian Bearhug. The crowd pleaded with Thesz to escape but this time he was unable to break out and Hackenschmidt cinched the hold on. The pressure became too much for Thesz and he was forced to concede the match giving Hackenschmidt a submission win and a second reign as LOW World Heavyweight champion. There was a sense of dread in the air as the icy “Russian Lion” put an end to a memorable title reign for Thesz who made eight successful defenses of the prestigious championship after winning it from The Sheik at WrestleCade VIII in Atlanta, GA (Card #800).
