I want to wish all of my fellow promoters a very Happy New Year and to close out the year here is some action from the NWC featuring more history being made. Hope you enjoy the show...
LOW Northern Wrestling Corporation - Pittsburgh Civic Center - Pittsburgh, PA (Card #944)
1) Sam Houston defeated Timber:
A great opening bout saw NWC newcomer Sam Houston out of Waco, TX, squaring off against ASW star Timber, “The Insane Lumberjack”, who is a former LOW Tex-Arkana Television champion. Both men were at the top of their games for this bout which featured several near falls and nearly went the distance. Timber nailed Houston with the Log Splitter in the early going but he kicked out just before the three count. Houston fought back and hit the Bulldog for a big near fall which saw Timber get his foot over the bottom rope. The action picked up in intensity with both men coming close to victory. The finishing sequence saw Houston, with the time winding down, counter a turnbuckle charge with a knee to the head. Houston then nailed Timber with a Dropkick and covered him to score the pin.
2) Drake Younger & Justin Credible defeated Backseat Boys:
The Backseat Boys (Trent Acid & Johnny Kashmere) of ASW took on the “Psycho Shooter” Drake Younger & Justin Credible in tag team action. This match turned out to be very intense and featured plenty of hardcore action and several near disqualification decisions on both sides. The Backseat Boys were really impressive and hit some nice double-team moves like the Backseat Driver and Dream Sequence 2002. They also nearly pinned a bloody Younger with the T-Gimmick, a double Crucifix Power Bomb, but Credible made the save. Younger bounced back and hit Drake’s Landing on Kashmere, who was also busted open during the bout, but Acid made the save. Credible was particularly effective during his time in and quite fittingly he ended this one in hardcore fashion when he blasted Kashmere with the Singapore Cane to score the pin.
3) George Steele defeated Jerry Lynn:
The popular Jerry Lynn took on the maniacal George “The Animal” Steele, made even more maniacal by the fact that his manager Fred Blassie was not at ringside. It was all Steele early as he battered Lynn both in and out of the ring including hitting him several times with a foreign object. He applied the Flying Hammerlock but Lynn was able to kick off of the ropes to escape from the punishing hold. Lynn battled back hard and scored a near fall with a top rope huracanrana. He also hit the sunset flip power bomb and took the match out to the floor but that proved to be a mistake. Steele took over and ran him shoulder first into the ring post. That set up the finish as back inside he caught Lynn in the Flying Hammerlock for a second time and that resulted in a submission victory for “The Animal”.
4) Apter’s Corner with Nikolai Volkoff & Iron Sheik:
After his interview with Stars & Stripes (The Patriot & Marcus Alexander Bagwell) on a recent edition of LOW All-Star Wrestling, Nikolai Volkoff & Iron Sheik demanded that PWI Editor Bill Apter give them equal time. Apter traveled to Pittsburgh to host a live edition of Apter’s Corner and welcomed Volkoff and Sheik to the ring which drew jeers and chants of “USA” from the crowd. Apter attempted to ask a question but the Iron Sheik grabbed the mic away from him and began ranting about Stars & Stripes and the USA in general. He said that Apter and his “USA magazine”, Pro Wrestling Illustrated, are biased towards American wrestlers and that they always rank him and Volkoff among the “Most Hated” in the magazine. Volkoff agreed and demanded to know why the magazines give him and the Iron Sheik no respect and that it has cost them championship opportunities. Apter balked at that and said that wins and quality of opposition determine the title contenders and that it had nothing to do with PWI. Volkoff and Sheik were not pleased with that answer and threatened the frightened reporter when suddenly Stars & Stripes hit the ring to a big pop from the crowd. The two quickly disposed of Volkoff and Sheik driving them out of the ring. The Patriot then grabbed the mic and said that the war would not end until one team is no longer in the NWDC. He then vowed that Stars & Stripes would avenge their loss to Volkoff and Sheik in the Flag Match on the last MSG card. Apter concluded thanking them for their assistance and wished them luck in their respective Coffin and Ladder Matches against Volkoff and Sheik on the next card at MSG (Card #952).
5) Killer Kowalski defeated Sabu by DQ:
The “Homicidal, Genocidal, and Suicidal” Sabu, accompanied by his manager Bill Alfonso, took on the equally feared Killer Kowalski who was accompanied by his manager Captain Lou Albano. The two managers were very active during the course of the match including Alfonso at one point tripping up Albano who tried to get involved as Kowalski was pinned after the Triple Jump Moonsault. Sabu also nearly won it with the Camel Clutch but Kowalski fought out of the punishing hold. The advantage changed several times building to the finish which saw Kowalski crush Sabu with a kick to the stomach from the second rope (deathjump). He then locked on the Kowalski Claw but Sabu raked his eyes to escape. Kowalski wasted no time in locking the hold on again but this time Alfonso ran in clawing at his eyes from behind. Kowalski stood up to confront him but Sabu clipped his legs and locked on the Camel Clutch. The referee called for the bell and disqualified Sabu for the attack by Alfonso. Albano then got in and began arguing with Alfonso who blew his whistle in his face. Sabu then tossed Kowalski out of the ring and charged at Albano who quickly dove through the middle rope to escape. The crowd cheered Sabu and Alfonso despite their losing effort which saw Kowalski get a rare disqualification win.
6) Frank Gotch, Dick Hutton, & Ilio DiPaolo defeated Gorgeous George, Cowboy Bob Orton, & Fritz Von Goering:
Big six-man tag team action saw the popular trio of Frank Gotch, Dick Hutton, & Ilio DiPaolo take on Gorgeous George, Cowboy Bob Orton, & Fritz Von Goering. It was all action from bell to bell as the six men mixed it up looking to take home the victory. Gotch outwrestled George in the early going and that frustrated the “Human Orchid” who tagged out to Orton. As Orton went to battle against Gotch it was George bailing to the outside to receive some compassion from his valet Cherie Dupre. The crowd jeered George as Dupre combed his hair and sprayed her perfume atomizer around ringside. Meanwhile the action picked up as the other five men went at it in what was a real spirited battle to the end. The finish came out of nowhere as Von Goering charged at Hutton in the corner but he sidestepped him and executed a Counter Roll-Up to score the pin.
7) One Man Gang defeated Tony Atlas:
The popular “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas had his hands full as he battled the 495-pound One Man Gang who was accompanied by his manager Captain Lou Albano. Atlas is well known for his bodybuilder physique and tremendous power and he had to put it all to use against his much larger opponent. He fared well throughout the early portion of the match and at one point impressively muscled up OMG for the Press Slam and Splash scoring a two count. OMG battled back and late into it he flattened Atlas with the 747 Splash. It looked to be over as OMG went for the pin but Atlas powered out of it at two drawing cheers from the crowd. Albano loudly voiced his displeasure at ringside saying it was a three count. This bout nearly ended in a time limit draw but it was OMG delivering a Scoop Bodyslam and press while using the ropes for leverage to score the pin. Atlas argued with the referee over the outcome but the decision stood and OMG escaped with the victory.
8) LOW World Heavyweight title: Bobo Brazil defeated George Hackenschmidt to win the title:
The main event saw Bobo Brazil, a two-time LOW World Heavyweight champion, going for a third reign as he challenged the “Russian Lion” George Hackenschmidt for the LOW World Heavyweight title. Over seven years have passed since Brazil held the gold and the Benton Harbor, MI, native was fired up as this bout got underway. The two men traded holds and counters throughout much of the early action before Brazil began to take over on offense. He blasted Hackenschmidt with the big hammer punch and then nearly won it by count out after delivering a Coco Butt on the floor. Hackenschmidt fought back furiously using a body scissors combined with a twisting heel hook to punish Brazil. He also delivered the backbreaker and wristlock suplex hoping to set up the challenger for the Russian Bearhug, one of the most feared finishing holds in LOW. Brazil was able to avoid that and used his own version of the bearhug for a submission chance. The crowd went crazy as Brazil had the champion on the ropes and they could sense that history was about to be made. Hackenschmidt was unable to mount a counter offensive late into it and Brazil nailed him with the Coco Butt to score the pin.
The crowd erupted in cheers as the popular Brazil regained the LOW World Heavyweight title becoming a three-time champion. A host of wrestlers led by Tony Atlas and Ilio DiPaolo rushed into the ring and hoisted Brazil up on their shoulders as he celebrated his title victory. PWI Editor Bill Apter furiously snapped photos from ringside hoping to capture the image to be used for the next cover of the magazine. Backstage it was Apter catching up with Brazil and asking him about what will be a very tough version one defense of the title coming up against Antonio Inoki at the Seibu Dome in Japan (Card #950). Brazil said that he is ready for the challenge and that Inoki will also have to prepare a new strategy since he won’t be facing Hackenschmidt now. Brazil added that he waited a long time to become the world champion again and that he will not go down without a fight in Japan. Apter thanked the new champion for his time and then filed a report revealing the full lineup for what will be a big night for Kings Road United at the Seibu Dome:
