LOW All-Star Wrestling (Episode 56) - WMC-TV5 Studios - Memphis, TN (Card #971)
Announcer Lance Russell opened the broadcast by saying that his color man Dave Brown was away on a weather related assignment but that sitting in for him this week was none other than PWI Editor Bill Apter. Russell welcomed Apter to the announce table and the two began going over some recent events most notably the big card at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY (Card #967). They focused on the epic brutality of the chain match between Randy Savage and Bruiser Brody which left both men the worse for wear. Russell noted that remarkably Savage was in the studio today and demanded ring time so he will be involved in one of the feature matches on the broadcast. Apter said that no one should question the perseverance of the “Macho Man” and that the loss to Brody will only fuel his desire for revenge. Russell said that Apter was right and that we likely haven’t seen the last of Savage against Brody. The two attempted to discuss the recent success of LOW World Heavyweight champion Bobo Brazil when they were interrupted by the sounds of Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30, some very familiar sounding theme music. An air of excitement flooded the studio as a man in a brilliant green and pink striped suit, dark sunglasses and flowing blonde hair strutted into camera range.
LR: “Who-kay this is certainly something unexpected but for those unfamiliar this is Jet Set Strutter, one of the premiere stars of 80’s Mania Wrestling which is the brand new sports entertainment brand taking the world by storm. Well I certainly didn’t expect…”
JSS: “Russell, just stand back and soak it all in. I am stylin and profilin, I am a wheeler dealer and I am the best thing going today – woooooooo! I figured this show was in dire need of some class and elegance so I flew here from Kitty Hawk, NC, on my Lear jet to give everyone a chance to bask in my greatness. Before I came out here you guys were talking about Bobo Brazil, who is no doubt a great athlete, and the LOW World Heavyweight title but there is only one championship I am out here to talk about and that is the 8MW World Heavyweight title.”
LR: “Well if you had given us a chance we were going to discuss the…”
JSS: “Wait a minute Russell there is only one of us qualified to talk about that and that man is me, woooooooo! As you may have heard by now, the four commissioners of 8MW got together and decided to put together a sixteen-man single elimination tournament to determine the first 8MW World Heavyweight champion. I informed them that there was no need to do that as I am the only one worthy of holding the ten pounds of gold but they told me that it was unfair to the rest of the talent. With that in mind I relented and permitted them to hold the tournament which will take place over the next couple of days, woooooooo!”
LR: “Now hold on one minute you permitted them to schedule a tournament, now I have heard everything. I have to say that there are fifteen other competitors involved and I am sure that your first round opponent, Rad Racer, would love nothing better than to eliminate you before you can even get a look at that title belt.”
JSS: “Russell you are lucky that I am a patient and civil man or I would slap that smirk right off of your face. Listen up and listen good, I am the only man worthy of being called the first 8MW World Heavyweight champion and if you think some young punk like Rad Racer is going to defeat me you have some learning to do about just who I am. I am Jet Set Strutter, baby, and I have a Six-Figure Leglock that will secure that gold right around my waist and when that tournament is over everyone will know just who is the greatest of all time, woooooooo!”
LR: “Ok, well there he goes and boy is that guy confident. We were going to save it for later in the show but I guess now is as good a time as any to reveal the first round tournament pairings which take place at the Empire Gardens. The tournament takes place all week and the finals will be broadcast right here on LOW All-Star Wrestling next week (Card #981):
That is one solid lineup and it will be fun to see how it plays out and of course you will see the tournament finals right here next week. 8MW is a heck of a lot of fun and quite a contrast to the pro wrestling product you regularly see in LOW. With that I’ll let Bill tell you about what else we have in store today.”
BA: “Thanks Lance, and speaking of 8MW we have Lazer taking on Cobalt Commander in a Finisher Match here today. Both men are ready for this one but only one will go into the title tournament with some momentum. As far as other tournaments go the eighth annual PWI Invitational Cup Tournament is currently being decided via qualifying matches and thus far NWC star Fred Blassie has qualified to compete in the opening round during WrestleCade X weekend. Today we have another qualifying match featuring AWE star King Kong Bundy, accompanied by his manager Jimmy Hart, taking on the “Golden Greek” John Tolos of PCW and that should be a real battle. In addition we have appearances from the “Macho Man” Randy Savage, the devastating team of The Warlord & One Man Gang, and a debut that I am looking forward to as we will see the “Wild Bull of the Pampas”, Pampero Firpo, in action. If that weren’t enough I also have a pre-taped and most interesting interview with Mil Mascaras and the beautiful Trish Stratus, who is now signed to a contract with SHIMMER, will be here live for an interview. With that let’s throw it over to our ring announcer Gary Michael Cappetta to get the action underway.”
1) PWI Invitational Cup Tournament Qualifying Match: King Kong Bundy defeated John Tolos:
This qualifying match between King Kong Bundy, accompanied by his manager Jimmy Hart, and the “Golden Greek” John Tolos wasn’t pretty. Both men dug down into their bag of tricks hoping to come away with the victory. The crowd was spilt in their support though towards the end the cheers for Tolos grew as he attempted to finish off his near 500-pound opponent. Bundy hit an elbow drop off of the ropes early for a two count but Tolos bounced back with a two count of his own delivering a thumb to the throat. Tolos performed impressively despite the weight difference and had Bundy in trouble several times. Bundy, however, would use that size to take over and after delivering a running power slam he sent Tolos to the corner and flattened him with the Avalanche. Bundy covered Tolos and demanded the five count which he got to score the pin and join Fred Blassie in the opening round of the tournament during WrestleCade X weekend. A jubilant Hart ran over to the announce table post-match shouting “This is the greatest day of my life!” as an exasperated Lance Russell threw it to commercial.
● Interview – Trish Stratus:
Following the commercial break Lance Russell ventured to ringside to introduce a special guest and the newest star of SHIMMER – Trish Stratus! The studio audience cheered wildly as the beautiful native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, made her way out. She greeted Russell warmly and smiled and waved at the audience who were clearly happy to see her there. He asked her what made her decide on coming to LOW and signing a contract with SHIMMER. She said that she had done just about everything in her career except for one thing and that was to hold the SHIMMER championship. She added that the quality of opposition in SHIMMER is top notch and that it really is the only place to be for any woman wrestler who wants to test themselves against the best. Russell said that was a great answer but now would come the tough question and that is what she is doing to prepare for her debut match in Berwyn, IL (Card #978) against none other than “Sweet” Saraya Knight. He noted that it also comes with the added pressure that Knight will get a shot at the SHIMMER championship if she wins the match. Stratus said that Knight is as tough as they come and that she will have her work cut out for her but that she will do whatever it takes to win. She added that preparing for Knight is difficult because she will also do whatever it takes to win and is well known to go way outside of the rulebook to accomplish her goals. Russell thanked Stratus for her time and wished her luck in her debut match for SHIMMER. She thanked both him and the studio audience for the warm welcome saying that the era of “Stratusfaction” is just getting started in LOW.
2) Randy Savage defeated Dustin Lee:
The intense “Macho Man” Randy Savage hit the ring ready to take on “Die Hard” Dustin Lee, one half of the Naptown Dragons. The crowd erupted in cheers for the “Macho Man” who had tape covering the fresh scars on his forehead courtesy of Bruiser Brody. He showed no other physical effects of that chain match, however, as he tore into Lee with reckless abandon. He delivered the piledriver and a variety of flying axe handle smashes, including one from the top rope to the floor. Lee made a brief comeback and scored a quick two count with the Dragon Uppercut but it was all downhill from there. Savage nailed him with a running knee to the back and then delivered a crushing Neckbreaker Clothesline to score the pin. The crowd cheered the win by Savage who grabbed the ring mic post-match and said that Brody got the better of him that night at MSG but there will be a next time and that will be the final time with the “Macho Man” getting the job done. As Savage left the ring both Lance Russell and Bill Apter wondered just what Savage had in mind the next time that he and Brody meet.
3) The Warlord & One Man Gang defeated Heartbreak Express:
The cult favorite Heartbreak Express (Fabulous Phil Davis & Superstar Sean Davis) of ASW had their hands full taking on the massive NWC team of The Warlord & One Man Gang. The Express started out fast and furious hitting The Warlord with both the drop toe hold and big splash and Irish Whip and Flying Butt Bomb combos drawing cheers from the crowd. Phil then went for a deathjump but The Warlord picked him off with a back breaking bodyslam. He then trapped Phil in the Full Nelson as OMG took out Sean with a running corner splash. Moments later it was over as Phil tapped out to the powerful Full Nelson of The Warlord. It was an impressive win for the twosome managed by Captain Lou Albano and one has to wonder if they have the LOW World tag team titles in their sights.
4) 8MW Offer Match – Finisher Match: Lazer defeated Cobalt Commander:
The debut of the 80’s Mania Wrestling stars on the last edition of LOW All-Star Wrestling had everyone buzzing and this match between Lazer and Cobalt Commander was set up after a confrontation during an interview segment. With the addition of an 8MW World Heavyweight title tournament being announced it meant there was even more importance added to this Finisher Match between the two stars. It was stipulated that the Lazerlock and the Cobalt Clutch would be the respective finishers needed to win the match. Cobalt Commander dominated from the opening bell and had Lazer in serious trouble, including blinding him with the Poison Powder several times. He also locked on the Cobalt Clutch but Lazer kicked off of the turnbuckles to escape from the punishing hold. Lazer began battling back and caught Cobalt Commander with some impressive offense. Equally impressive was Cobalt Commander again turning the tide and dropping Lazer with the Commander Slammer and the neckbreaker. Lazer rallied again late and hit the one-handed bulldog before trapping Cobalt Commander in his signature Lazerlock. Cobalt Commander tried to get out of it but ultimately tapped out giving Lazer the victory via submission. It was a huge win for Lazer who hopes to build on that momentum going into the 8MW World Heavyweight title tournament.
5) Pampero Firpo defeated S.D. Jones:
The popular S.D. “Special Delivery” Jones of ASW had his hands full going against free agent star Pampero Firpo hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentine. Jones held the upper hand briefly before Firpo staggered him with a headbutt and a knee lift resulting in a two count. Firpo, who is the master of the El Garfio claw hold, followed up with a powerful Bearhug which resulted in a submission victory. It was an impressive debut for Firpo who is reportedly considering a freelance contract with LOW.
● Interview – Mil Mascaras:
This exclusive pre-recorded interview saw PWI Editor Bill Apter travel to Mexico City, Mexico, to talk with Mil Mascaras, the “Man of 1,000 Masks” and the record seven-time LOW World Heavyweight champion. The two met up poolside at a luxury hotel in Mexico City with a number of beautiful women nearby. It was an ideal location for the interview and Apter point blank asked Mascaras what his goals are and if that included an eighth run as the world heavyweight champion. Mascaras said it had been over four years since he last held the title, having last lost it to Fred Blassie at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY (Card #568), and that he had not really challenged for it since. Apter asked why and Mascaras said that his freelance contract with LOW allows him to set his own schedule and that for the time being he is content with his situation. He added that he currently has a contract on the table to compete in the upcoming 12-Man Gold Star Battle Royal at MSG (Card #985), where the winner faces the LOW World Heavyweight champion at WrestleCade X, but that he had decided not to sign it. Apter asked why as that would be the perfect opportunity for him to regain the world title. Mascaras answered that he was honored to be considered for a spot but that he had something even bigger in mind for the big event. Apter couldn’t understand what could be bigger than competing for the LOW World Heavyweight title on WrestleCade X at the Astrodome in Houston, TX (Card #1000) and Mascaras cut him off. He answered that to date there is something that has never been done in LOW and that he wanted to be the first man to do it and that was to defeat Andre the Giant in the middle of the ring. Apter was shocked by the response and said that the two men are very good friends and Mascaras agreed but said that business is business and he wanted the opportunity to become the first man to defeat Andre. It was a shocking announcement and Apter concluded the interview saying that he would attempt to track down Andre for the next edition of LOW All-Star Wrestling and see if he would answer yes to the challenge.
6) Scotty Vortekz defeated Koko B. Ware (2-1):
There was still a buzz going on surrounding Mil Mascaras issuing a challenge to Andre the Giant for WrestleCade X as the popular “Birdman” Koko B. Ware took on the other half of the Naptown Dragons, Scotty Vortekz, in this expiration of time match. Lance Russell said that he hoped that Andre would answer yes to the challenge as that match would be pretty amazing to see. Apter agreed and said that Mascaras seemed pretty determined to go one-on-one with Andre at WrestleCade X, noting that he will try to have an answer from Andre next week. Making his debut in this match was new LOW Senior Referee Morgan Dollar who was recently appointed to that position by LOW Commissioner Charlie Cox. Dollar showed great generalship opting to be more lenient and looking for a clean finish to the match. Ware stunned Vortekz quickly and hit a Cross Bodyblock to score the pin. He followed that up with the Ghostbuster but Vortekz had his foot draped over the bottom rope on the pin attempt. Vortekz then evened things up nailing Ware with the Dragonfly to score the pin. Russell noted that there was still time for another fall so the match continued and it was Vortekz connecting with a Moonsault to score the pin. Ware needed to hurry to even it up but time ran out and Vortekz received a 2-1 decision victory.
