TWF year in review part I TWF Championship - Andre the Giant continued his reign of dominance through the year. Andre had memorable title defenses against a variety of challengers. King Kong Bundy fell in the spring at Border Brawl from Buffalo while Claudio Castignoli was another frequent challenger. Both were turned away by Andre at every step. Blackjack Mulligan, Big John Studd and Don Leo Jonathan also frequently challenged Andre in battles of the goliaths and came up short. Andre had too many weapons at his disposal. Andre also turned back footballers such as Steve Williams, Dan Spivey and Angelo Mosca at different times but these matches were exciting as each could nearly match the Giant in the power and impact departments.
The other serious challenge occured during the Summer as Randy Savage challenged Andre in a title-vs-title Super Summer Series. Savage actually notched a count-out and pinfall victory in matches 2 & 4 but Andre dominated matches 3 & 5 to clinch the series.
Many experts pointed this series as a catalyst as a "how-to" beat the Giant and two people likely paid particular attention: Nick Bockwinkel and Bobby Heenan. Bockwinkel used this scouting knowledge and applied it successfully during the Tournament of Champions held at November Pain in Philadelphia. Bockwinkel notched a victory over former TWF Champion Bruiser Brody in the opening quarterfinal round and defeated former dual champion of the TWF heavyweight and tag-team divisions: Rob Van Dam in the finals. Bockwinkel gained bye in the semifinals as Heenan Family teammate could not compete due to injury sustained in a DQ victory over Randy Savage in the quarterfinals. This victory earned Bockwinkel a title shot against Andre The Giant at the year-end Battle of The Belts.
Bockwinkel and Heenan looked sharp in the best-of-three title match at Battle of the Belts. The Meadowlands was the location and Bockwinkel used the tag rope to gain the first fall of his patented SLEEPER. Bockwinkel and Heenan continued to flout the rulebook to earn a disqualification in fall #2 but Andre was weakened enough to leave himself in dire straits at the start of the final fall. Blood loss and Bobby Heenan moving the bottom rope out of Andre's reach while trapped in a FIGURE-FOUR LEGLOCK.
Bockwinkel surprisingly rolled up Andre after continously working on his legs with the deadly hold and recaptured the TWF Championship to close out the year!!

TWF year in review part II
TWF Tag-Team Championship - The TWF's most volatile championship continued its exciting title history as the belt was defended by fan favorites Superfly Snuka and Bobo Brazil against the Masked Superstars, International Favorites:Inoki and Mil Mascaras along with the Midnight Express (Eaton & Condrey).
Snuka and Brazil fell to the extreme team of Rob Van Dam and Sabu during the summer to end their reign. Team extreme defended against Fuji and Saito along with the Sheepherders during their short stint as Andre The Giant and Tommy Rich answered an open challenge from team extreme . This duo won the titles on their first try but lost the titles to the Kevin Sullivan-led Varsity Club of Steve Williams and Dan Spivey.
The Varsity Club dominated the competition until losing a three-way match to the Sheepherders. The other contestant in that match, the Samoan Swat Team subsequently captured the titles from the Sheepherders, sparking a wild rivalry between these two crazed teams. The duos used standard matches, falls count anywhere and barbed wire matches to settle on a winner. Eventually, the Sir Oliver Humperdink-led SST held off the challenge from the crazy New Zealanders. The Samoan Swat Team enters the new year defending against all comers.
TWF Ladies Champion Sensational Sherri dominated the competition against such favorites and The Huntress (April Hunter), Penny Banner, Lelani Kai, Ida Mae and Shanna-Ra. Sherri also performed occasional managerial duties with Playboy Buddy Rose.
Sherri kept herself busy as usual. Sherri has new challenges on the horizon with newcomers Rockin' Robin and Mother Superior. Plus Shann-Ra has unfinished business with Sherri as many of their prior matches ended after close calls for both champion and challenger.
