Tempering my enthusiasm after what happened last year but it's hard. I find myself jumping out of my seat and pumping my fist every time the Tigs close one out. I'm even following the rest of the division close as ever. Today's game is big (let's hope Leland doesn't sit everyone and give it away) chance to sweep the Royals before the BIGGEST series of the year so far next week vs. the Tribe.

Well Martinez is no doubt out, as is Mags today I presume. Leyland always likes to rest guys for the 3rd game of a series if it's in the afternoon. But with tomorrow being an off day, maybe not.
Totally want to hit Cleveland Thursday night to see JV pitch on the road.

eye-on-baseball.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22297882/31168682Not only did Jered Weaver drop his appeal of his six-game suspension on Saturday, he also got in a jab at Tigers' second baseman Carlos Guillen in doing so. After announcing he'd dropped his appeal, the Angels' right-hander was asked why he didn't wait until next year to retaliate against Guillen, Weaver told reporters, including Sam Miller of the Orange County Register: "Is he going to have a job next year?" And while it sounds harsh, it's a valid question. Guillen, 35, has played in just 18 games this season and just 167 in the last three seasons after back-to-back All-Star appearances in 2007 and 2008. Guillen is hitting .215/.243/.354 with two homers and 11 RBI in 18 games and 70 plate appearances this season. He spent the first half of the season on the disabled list recovering from micro fracture surgery he had last September. Guillen is in the final year of a four-year, $48 million contract. As for dropping the appeal, Weaver and the Angels are taking advantage of their off day on Monday, allowing the team to keep their rotation on regular rest by just skipping Weaver in the rotation and letting him start a couple of days later after his suspension is served. While appealing the suspension, Weaver was able to pitch on Friday, earning a no-decision after throwing nine shutout innings against the Mariners in a 10-inning 1-0 Angels victory.

Guillen is a marginal player at this point, but does that make Weaver look any better for giving up a homer to him?

danny-knobler.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/8590096/31192511With the trade deadline behind us, August is the month to speculate on managers and general managers who could lose their jobs after the season. Cross Detroit off the list. The Tigers extended the contracts of manager Jim Leyland and GM Dave Dombrowski on Monday, giving the 66-year-old Leyland a contract for 2012 and signing Dombrowski to a new four-year deal, through 2015. Both previously had contracts that expired at the end of the season, and owner Mike Ilitch had hinted (but never actually said) that he expected this team to win and could hold either or both accountable if it didn't. The Tigers are 61-53, and hold a four-game lead over the Indians in the American League Central. Dombrowski came to the Tigers as club president after the 2001 season, and took over as general manager when Randy Smith was fired six games into the 2002 season. He hired Leyland 3 1/2 later, and the two took the Tigers to the World Series in 2006. Leyland and Dombrowski won a World Series together, with the Marlins in 1997. Leyland is 485-440 in his 5 1/2 years with the Tigers, after taking over a team that had gone 13 years without a winning record. But the Tigers have also spent money in the last few years, and the 82-year-old Ilitch has let it be known that he expects results. Leyland has preferred to work under one-year deals, saying in the past that he doesn't know how long he wants to manage. The Tigers also announced that they have extended the contracts of Dombrowski's top assistants: Al Avila, John Westhoff, Scott Reid and David Chadd.

Surprised they did this early. All indications were the team was going to wait to see if we made the playoffs first before granting extensions.

1) I'm totally cool with the Tigers re-upping Dombrowlski's contract and keeping the skip around for another tour. I actually think thr timing is perfect. Big lead over the Tribe, going into a series vs. them. Club morale couldn't be higher right now. I think this move really rallies the troops. I would say the same thing for any club in the same spot as my Tigers.
2) The ending to last night's game was a major kick to the nuts. Stayed up all night to watch, and after an hours long rain delay, the game drags on into 14 innings and some scrub pitcher I've never heard of hits a batter to send in the winning run. Uhg.

Yeah was so glad to stay up all night for that ending. Gotta take the next two.

I keep trying to tell myself "They aren't falling apart...they aren't falling apart..." but it's getting tougher and tougher. We simply can't get by on Verlander alone. Is ANYONE else going to step up and pitch a decent game?
