....Gulf Coast returns to action after a seemingly very long delay. It's amazing just how long 7 days can seem. The
GCCW tag titles are on the line as Mr Fuji/Mr Saito defend against Tony Atlas/Koko B. Ware in the main event. JJ Dillon steps into the ring as he leads his newly signed duo of Johnny Valentine/Dan Spivey against the Heenan Family and Curt Hennig makes his debut in the territory. Let's go to the action....
1. Curt Hennig def. Chief Joe Omega via pinfall.
Curt Hennig's debut caught many by surprise but both Bobby Heenan and JJ Dillon were at ringside scouting the latest addition to the GCCW roster. Heenan and Dillon got into a shouting match at ringside but that didn't deter Curt from totally dominating Omega. Curt used his entire arsenal of moves before dropping Omega with the HENNIG PLEX for the win. Hennig ignored both Heenan and Dillon as they tried to get his attention as he left ringside.
2. Bobby Shane def. Bob Armstrong via referee stoppage.
The Armstrongs need a win of any kind in either singles or tag competition to stop their slide. The Armstrongs will always be heavy fan favorites in the area regardless of their win/loss records. Bobby Shane comes into the match undefeated in the start of his second month in the territory. For most of the match, it looked like Bob would score a win over Shane when Bob dropped Shane with a knee lift for a big nearfall. However, Shane was able to get his foot under the bottom rope at the last possible moment to stop the 3-count. The match was lost for Bob when he missed a turnbuckle charge and Shane locked in the JAPANESE SLEEPER for the finish. Shane has now beaten both Armstrongs in singles competition.
3. Tommy Rich/Tracy Smothers def. the Bushwackers via pinfall.
These two teams faced off two weeks ago with Rich/Smothers getting the duke in a one-sided match. Rich/Smothers continue to face anybody willing to get into the ring with them as they look for that elusive shot at the GCCW tag titles. Like the last match between these two teams, Rich/Smothers steamrolled Butch/Luke as Tommy Rich was the star of the match. Tommy lands the THESZ PRESS on Butch Miller for the finish. Rich/Smothers continue their unbeaten run since coming back from their suspension on March 29th.
4. Mr X w/ Sir Oliver Humperdink def. The Crusher via pinfall.
The mysterious Mr X has generated a lot of heel heat since his first appearance in the territory and the fans are growing tired of his rule-breaking antics. First, he injured Blackjack Mulligan, who is not due back for another 3 weeks, but he's also gone over the 'rough and tumble' Crusher as well. This one didn't start well for Crusher as Mr X jumped him coming down the rampway. The beating was brutal as Crusher accumulated 8 tokens and was bleeding buckets before the match was over. The super-tough Crusher survived two RUNNING PILEDRIVERs before Humperdink got involved in the match. Mr X used the distraction to tape his thumb and jab it into Crusher's throat several times before the referee turned around. Still, Crusher did not go down as he kicked out of repeated nearfalls. Finally, Mr X dropped a big knee drop onto Crusher and the big man finally stayed down.
The crowd came unglued when Mr X jabbed his taped thumb in Crusher's throat again for added insult. GCCW officials had to call for an intermission to settle the crowd down.
5. Johnny Valentine/Dan Spivey/JJ Dillon def. The Heenan Family w/ Bobby Heenan by submission.
This match was a wild donny-brook with a screwy finish and a surprise appearance. Heenan had given orders that Bockwinkel would not start the match as Heenan is looking to protect his meal ticket. This suited Dillon's crew as Valentine started off against Ox Baker and dominated his mustached foe. Ox took a lot of punishment and wore down quickly but still was able to tag in Ray Stevens. Dan Spivey tossed Stevens around like a rag doll until Stevens took Spivey down with a low-blow. Bock tagged in and took Spivey to school.
Nick ran through his offense and sunk in the FIGURE-FOUR LEGLOCK before Dillon broke the hold up. It quickly broke down into a 3-on-2 as Dillon ran for his life. Somehow, Baker and Dillon were deemed the legal men and the referee tried to get the Heenan Family back to their corner. As this was going on, Dillon locked in his own Figure-Four on Baker. Heenan motioned towards the back as Valentine and Spivey dropped knees onto Baker's leg.
Out from the back, Curt Hennig sprinted to the ring as Heenan instructed him to help Baker in the ring. Hennig grabbed Dillon by the hair as Heenan screamed with joy but Curt leaped over Dillon and crushed the now-sitting Ox Baker with a huge lariat. It was academic after that as Baker submitted and Heenan was beside himself at ringside. After the match, Dillon introduced his now-named stable as the Natural Born Horsemen.
JJ Dillon has fired the opening shot againt Bobby Heenan with his signing of Curt Hennig to his NBH stable.
6. The Destroyer def. Mad Dog Vachon w/ Sir Oliver Humperdink via pinfall.
It would be hard to top the last two matches on the show but our two competitors definitely gave it their all. The Destroyer is fresh off his Best of 5 Series win over Antonio Inoki and looks to keep up his momentum with this match. On the flip side, Mad Dog and his brother, Butcher, are firmly entrenched as the #1 contenders for the GCCW tag titles and could challenge for the titles as early as May 29th. Mad Dog's mean streak showed in this match as he bit and clawed Destroyer, eventually opening up a hole in Destroyer's mask. Humperdink got involved when things weren't going Mad Dog's way but Destroyer lifted the 'rotund one' up for a Sensational Suplex and dropped him to eliminate that threat. Later in the match, Mad Dog hauled Destroyer up for the PILEDRIVER but Destroyer reversed the hold into a huge Sensational Suplex into the turnbuckle for the finish.
7. Main Event: GCCW tag titles: Mr Fuji/Mr Saito def. Tony Atlas/Koko B. Ware by submission to retain the titles.
These two teams met for the titles three weeks ago where Atlas/Ware dominated the match but only won by count-out and didn't secure the titles. The trouble between Atlas and Ware have been documented but they clicked on all cylinders early in the match. However, the trouble started when Atlas hit a huge dropkick on Mr Fuji and went for the pin. Koko actually pulled Tony off Fuji to break up the pin and went on to admonish Tonly for not letting him win the match. Fuji/Saito took advantage and dumped Koko to the floor and then went to work on Tony. Koko threw up his hands in disgust, grabbed Frankie, and stalked to the back leaving Tony in a 2-on-1 situation. Try as he might, Tony could not overcome the odds and fell to Saito's Prison Deathlock. This is Fuji/Saito's 4th defense of the titles and they have yet to lose by pinfall or submission. They will definitely be challenged as The Vachons loom over the horizon as that match was confirmed for May 29th.
