WWA #19
Grand Olympic Auditorium; Los Angeles
Grand Olympic Auditorium; Los Angeles
Two huge matches on tonight's card as we will finally crown new WWA tag team champions in the Main Event. We will also see who gets the next shot at Mil Mascaras and the Americas' championship.
---In our opener, Gorgeous George survives a furious challenge from Koko B. Ware as timely interference by Cherie Dupree turned the match in George's favor. George wins with his SPINNING TOE HOLD finisher. Ware looked distraught after the match and walked to the back with his head down.
---Another violent encounter between Bobo Brazil/SD Jones and Sabu/Kevin Sullivan. The rudos isolated Jones for a long time in the match and succeeded in busting the popular wrestler open. A hot tag to Bobo turned things around for a while as Bobo manhandled both Sabu/Sullivan until Jones tagged himself into the match. Jones put up a fight but eventually he started to wear down. Sullivan hits the DOUBLE FOOT STOMP for the finish.
---The first encounter between The Hennigs vs Love Brothers is a singles match between Larry Hennig and Reginald Love. Larry controls throughout the match as he methodically takes his opponent apart. Interference from Sensational Sherri only delays the inevitable as the elder Hennig goes on to win the match with a huge Elbow Drop from the second rope.
---Earlier this week, King Kong Bundy had some interesting things to say about Don Leo Jonathan's win in the Battle Royal last week. Bundy called DLJ's win a fluke as it took DLJ and The Destroyer to eliminate him from the competition. Bundy laid out a challenge for DLJ this week and somehow Pepper Gomez and Ray Stevens got dragged into it, so DLJ/Gomez vs Bundy/Stevens was signed for tonight's show.
DLJ vs Bundy started the match and the two went at each other with a furious reckless abandon. Twice, DLJ tried to haul Bundy up for the MORMON SWING but Bundy was able to grab the ropes to prevent the move. Gomez and Stevens get tagged in and these two enemies go at each other as well. Gomez/Stevens exchange finishers as DLJ/Bundy are jawing at each other from across the ring. The match turns into a wild brawl between all four wrestlers. Somehow, DLJ vs Stevens ends up as the official duo in the ring. The finish comes as DLJ is setting Stevens up for the MORMON SWING but Bundy squashes DLJ into the turnbuckle. This gives Stevens the chance to scale the turnbuckle and drop his BOMBS AWAY finisher on DLJ to get the win for his ad-hoc team.
---Our next match has huge title implications as Johnny Valentine vs Nick Bockwinkel will determine Mil Mascaras' next challenger. Both men are equally loathed by the Olympic crowd and they let each man know it during match introductions. The two try some shenanigans to no avail early on and settle into one of the best matches in the early history of this fed. Both men try to end it early with their finishers but the other easily gets out of the move. Counter after counter has the match advantage swing between both men throughout the match as both want this title shot.
Bock sees an opening when Johnny rolls to the floor but Valentine grabs Bock's legs, dragging him to the post, and slamming his leg into the ringpost. Bock would limp for the rest of the match and Johnny has effectively neutralized Bock's FIGURE FOUR finisher. Johnny goes on the offensive and opens a cut across Bock's forehead with repeated ATOMIC SKULLCRUSHERS. However, Nick fights back and tries to lock in the FIGURE FOUR but due to the earlier damage can't set it in. From there, Valentine starts working over Nick's weakened leg to the point Bock has issues putting weight on that leg. This gives Valentine the opportunity to size Nick up for the ATOMIC SKULLCRUSHER but somehow Nick is able to get a shoulder up. However, with Nick down, Johnny lands an avalanche ATOMIC SKULLCRUSHER on Bock to pick up the win. Valentine will get his chance at the title on #21.
---It's finally time for our Main Event as we will crown new WWA tag team champions tonight in the final match of the RRTTS between The Fantastics vs the Hamilton Wrecking Crew vs Pampero Firpo/Wild Bull Curry.
The Fantastics are introduced first but to the crowd's horror, they get jumped from behind by Mr Fuji and Mr Saito. The Japanese heels do a number on the fan favorites as they post both Rogers and Fulton. Security finally is able to break up the mugging but the damage is done. A ringside doctor quickly assesses that Rogers/Fulton can't continue the match and The Fantastics are ruled out of the match. We take a 15-minute intermission to get Rogers/Fulton to the back and WWA officials calm the crowd down with the announcement that The Fantastics will get a tag title shot in the near future.
We finally get back underway with just the Tolos Brothers vs Firpo/Curry. This match turned into a barn burner even without the technicos in the match. Fists flew freely in this match as the crowd enjoyed two rudo teams beating the heck out of each other. Curry's RIGHT HAND PUNCH finisher was lethal as he busted both Tolos Brothers open with the move. Firpo/Curry were busted open when the match went to the Auditorium floor and both were posted by the Tolos! The Tolos kept dropping their FLYING KNEEDROP finisher on both Firpo/Curry as multiple saves were utilized to keep the match going.
As the tokens mounted from the Tolos' finishers, Firpo/Curry were a bloody mess. With Chris holding Firpo down in the ring and the referee admonishing him for making a tag and not immediately getting out of the ring, John climbed the turnbuckle for one last FLYING KNEEDROP. Somehow, Curry was able to pull himself to his feet and blast John with BRASS KNUCKLES. John Tolos dropped to the mat like a rock as Firpo double kneed Chris Tolos in the face. Pampero locks in EL GARFIO and John Tolos' shoulders are counted down, giving the match, the RRTTS, and the tag titles to Firpo/Curry!!!
Firpo/Curry are presented the WWA tag titles afterwards to a respectful response from the crowd as they know they have just witnessed history.
***A history making card is in the books as we look forward to Card #20. The Main Event will be a continuation of the very promising Don Leo Jonathan vs King Kong Bundy match-up. Bundy has called for DLJ to put up his automatic title shot but WWA officials stepped in and refused to accept that stipulation. DLJ has accepted the match against Bundy as we look for fireworks between these two.
Also on the card, Tony Atlas/Koko B. Ware vs the Hollywood Blondes, Curt Hennig vs Hartford Love, the Masked Canadian is scheduled to make an appearance, and Blackjack Mulligan will make his debut.
Plus, look for a special 'Going Forward' before #20 detailing roster moves and injury reports.
