Thanks for the comment Kamala.
Rogers will have to be white hot when he gets back if he has any chance of getting near the top of the contenders list.
Card 1.10 – Pittsburgh, PA – Civic Arena
Match 1: King Kong Bundy v. Playboy Buddy Rose
Great heat for both men. Bundy is promising the fans the five count tonight. Rose struggles with Bundy’s size and resorts to a foreign object and Bundy does colour. Rose survives an AVALANCHE and hits a BOMBS AWAY but cannot get Bundy’s shoulders down for three. A bloody Bundy makes his comeback and ends it with a second AVALANCHE. (Bundy 5; Rose 5) (* ½)
Match 2: Ox Baker v. Killer Kowalski
The last two battles between these two have been intense and the fans were expecting more of the same in their rubber match. The match goes back and forth with both men picking up a near fall. The fans pop for an overhead body slam on Baker. The action goes to the floor and both mean rip up ringside. The referee comes out and cannot break things up and the match ends up a double disqualification. The action continues until officials arrive to break separate the two. The issue between these two remains unsettled. (Baker 5, Kowalski 4) (*)
Match 3: Frank Gotch v. Ted DiBiase w/Virgil
Gotch’s frustration has cost him in recent outing against the Million Dollar Man. If Gotch can keep his cool tonight, he might be able to get the win. The Million Dollar Man starts strong but Gotch rolls clear of a deathjump smash that leads to a near fall in Gotch’s favour. DiBiase bails and then drags Gotch to the floor and whips him into the ring post. The referee makes a snap disqualification call. DiBiase is not pleased and neither are the fans. Virgil joins DiBiase for a two on one beat down at ringside until Red Bastien arrives with a steel chair in hand to break up the attack. (DiBiase 3; Gotch 1) (*)
Match 4: Nick Bockwinkel v. Harley Race
Bockwinkel’s stock is on the rise especially after his performance last card in the six man tag team match. A win tonight would likely put Bockwinkel at the top of the contenders list. Race comes out strong in the opening minutes and picks up a near fall with a vertical suplex. Bockwinkel makes his comeback blocking a backdrop with a piledriver and eventually puts Race away with a BOCKWINKEL SLEEPER. (Race 3; Bockwinkel 4) (*)
Match 5: Texas Tornado Match – Road Warriors v. Team Extreme
It is chaos from the open bell. The action is all over the place. The Warriors dominate this one punishing both The Sandman and Jimmy Snuka in and out of the ring. Animal takes out Snuka at ringside with a spiked armband to the head leaving Snuka in a bloody mess. Sandman is left alone against both Warriors and the match is quickly over with a DOOMSDAY DEVICE. After the bell, Sandman checks on a bloody and dazed Superfly at ringside helping him to his feet before dropping him on the floor with a HARDCORE DDT! (Hawk 3, Animal 3, Sandman 5; Snuka 5) (**)
Match 6: World Tag Team Title Match – Best of Three Falls – The Destroyer & Giant Baba (ch) v .Johnny Valentine & Greg Valentine
Media from Japan cover the action from ringside. The first fall is epic. The Valentines cut off Baba early on and work him over in and out of the ring. Baba does insane colour and the referee lets the action continue. Baba kicks out of an ATOMIC SKULLCRUSHER and Destroyer saves him from another. Destroyer is finally able to get the hot tag into the match and carries the load for the balance of the fall for his team. Destroyer is able to avoid Johnny Valentine’s deathjump and the Destroyer goes to work on Valentine’s leg. Greg Valentine saves his father from a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK but Baba is able to prevent the save a second time and Destroyer picks up the first fall. The second fall opens with Destroyer going right back to the leg but Valentine escapes a figure four leglock (ch) and bails to the floor. Valentine drags Destroyer to the floor and sends Destroyer into the ring post. The referee calls for the disqualification. The Champions retain in two straight falls. Greg Valentine gets in his father’s face after the match but they leave the ring together. (J. Valentine 7; G. Valentine 4; Destroyer 2; Baba 6) (**** ½ )
Match 7: World Title Match – Dick Hutton (ch) v. Bobo Brazil
Brazil is out to a solid pop from ringside. A handshake starts the action. They tie up and Brazil is sent into the corner. Hutton charges in but Brazil backdrops him to the floor. Hutton lands awkwardly and twists his leg. Hutton cannot recover at ringside and is counted out of the ring. Hutton retains and Brazil is frustrated once again in his bid for the World Title. (Brazil 1, Hutton 4) (dud)
Match 8: Steel Cage Match – Red Bastien v. Virgil
The crowd is electric as the steel cage is set in place. Bastien is out to a great pop. Virgil once again has his hands taped up which has given him a clear advantage in the past two meeting with Bastien. The only way to win this one is to escape the cage. Bastien is busted open early on in this one but manages to prevent Virgil from leaving the cage on several occasions even after a pair of COBRA CLUTCHES. The two battle on top of the buckles and Virgil eats the cage wall and is busted open. Bastien uses his mat skills to take over the match and then catches Virgil with consecutive flying head scissors which disorients Virgil enough to allow Bastien to walk out the cage door to victory. (Bastien 7; Virgil 7) (****)
News and Views: Wow, what a night of action. Bastien final gets one back from Virgil, Brazil gets screwed out of the World Title again, Team Extreme Explodes and Baba & Destroyer survive an epic Title Defence against the Valentines. Card 10 was intense.
