I have been really into Legends and have not played COTG for some time. I was cleaning out my closet last week and came across the battered shoe box that contained the COTG cards that I had purchased almost ten years ago. The cards were stained, discoloured and dog eared. But they were still glorious. I decided that I will play the occassional GWF card as a break from my Legend federations. I am starting in 2087 and making my way through the years. The dice have hit the table so lets get to the ring...
Card 2087.01.01 – Niagara Tower of Lights, New York, USA, Earth
The invisible airwaves of the holonet crackle to life and the fans see Commissioner Carter sitting in his office. Carter takes us through the GWF’s plan to recover from the shocking events of last season when Thantos turned his back on everything the GWF was built on and broke the Galactic Code. We learn that the Galaxian Title and Galaxian Tag Team Titles have been declared vacant and new champions will be determined tournaments that will get underway tonight.
Thantos comes to the ring to address the crowd and cuts a solid promo telling us he is set to face Invincible Krakan in the first round of the Galaxian Title Tournament tonight. Great reaction from ringside. Thantos states that Commissioner Carter’s attempt to drive a wedge between himself and Krakan will fail. Thantos questions Carter’s intelligence and doubts that he could come up with this on his own stating that the whole situation reeks of Omega and is meddling ways. Thantos tells Omega that he made his second mistake of the season already by trying to play games with the Gamesmaster. The first mistake was deciding to return to the ring. Thantos explains he will enjoy watching Omega’s son weep as his father experiences new levels of pain at the hands of the Death Knight and the Evil Ones. Thantos wraps things up by telling it does not matter what happens in this match with Krakan tonight because he has already won. The Galactic Code has been destroyed and the GWF will never be the same. There is nothing Omega or his diluted band of followers can do about it.
Galaxian Tag Team Title Tournament – Round One Match 1: Gladiators of Aethra (1) v. Executioner & Death Knight (8) Executioner actually gets some cheers from his home planet fans. Insiders question how and/or why Executioner would team with Knight but Knight looks impressive early on including using a loaded glove to bloody Brute. Later Knight counters Massacre’s backdrop with a piledriver. Executioner steps into the ring and downs Massacre with a HEADSMAN GUILLOTINE. 1, 2, 3 (R6/P6). What! The Gladiators are out of the tournament!
Backstage Wolf is watching the last match and walks away from the monitor laughing.
Match 2: Pulsar & Pit Viper (4) v. Space Croppers (5) Rider comes to ringside with a cute creature from his zoo and thrills the kids at ringside. Great pop for both teams and handshakes start the action. Viper and Renegade trade moves and Pulsar tags in. Renegade counters a backdrop with a piledriver and takes the young Titan to the floor. Pulsar shows some guts and reverses a whip into the ring post. The referee calls for the bell and disqualifies Pulsar. The fans cannot believe the call but regardless, the Space Croppers are onto the semi-finals.
Vanity is backstage looking in mirror trying to decide which his best side is.
Match 3: Killer Queen & Vanity (3) v. Ghengis Khan & Mutant (6) Queen comes out to a punk anthem that his hard on the ears. Vanity comes up next to classical music and draws huge heat as he takes several minutes to “prepare” for action. Khan and Vanity set a quickly pace. Khan scores with a running slingshot in the corner and follows with a TWIN THRUST for a 2 count (R7/P5). Khan immediately follows with a 2nd TWIN THRUST but Queen jumps into the ring starting a wild brawl. Khan & Mutant clear the ring but Vanity is able to counter a power slam and Queen tags in with a full nelson suplex on Khan. Queen quickly makes the cover for the 3 count (R5/P5) while Mutant chews on the turnbuckle.
The Federation Defense Fighters are back stage. Star Warrior tells his father he is proud of him and then wishes Omega & Commander Sam good luck. Sam and Omega head to the ring and Massif & Star Warrior turn to the monitor to watch the action.
Match 4: Greek Gods (2) v. Commander Sam & Omega (7). With Omega, arguably one of the most popular competitors of all time, in the same ring with the three of Earths most popular wrestlers, ringside comes unglued during the introductions. The fans are split down the middle and the teams exchange handshakes at the bell. It is back and forth with all four men seeing action. Omega catches Proteus with a spinning neckbreaker (ch) and follows with a karate chop for a 1 count (R8/P3). Proteus powers back including a flying elbow drop. Actagon tags in and traps Omega in a GRECIAN SLEEPER GRIP. Sam breaks up the hold with a Peacemaker slingshot. Omega connects with a TOMAHAWK THRUST for a 1 count (R8/P2). The action goes back and forth again. Actagon sends Sam into the ring post. Actagon works over Sam until Omega makes a defensive tag into the action. Proteus is in and overpowers Omega tossing the legend to the floor twice and then sending Omega to the mat with an OVERHEAD TOSS. Proteus gets the pin (R5/P7). Handshakes end the match and the fans give all four men a solid ovation.
Commander Sam and Omega take a few extra minutes to greet the fans and Comrade Terror attacks both men from behind with a steel chair. Omega goes down first and then Terror goes to work on Sam with the chair. Star Warrior joins the action and wrestles away the chair. Terror and Warrior brawl down to the ring.
Galaxian Title Tournament – Round One
Match 5: Star Warrior (2) v. Comrade Terror (7) The fight continues as the bell sounds. Warrior sends Terror into the corner but Terror connects with an elbow to the face and then tosses Warrior back to the floor. Terror rams Warrior’s head into steel rails busting Warrior open. The referee calls for the disqualification. Terror keeps the action going beating down on Warrior at ringside. Terror goes for an ATOMIC WARHEAD at ringside but a bloody Commanders Sam arrives with a steel chair in hand and decks Terror from behind. Security arrives to break things up.
The vid cam is backstage and there is carnage everywhere. The locker room door is off the hinges and Massacre is standing over a fallen Brute. Massacre grabs the vid cam and tells everyone that now that they have sorted out their differences, the Gladiators will destroy anyone who stands between them and the Tag Team Titles. Brute starts to rise and Massacre lays some more boots into him before returning to the camera. Massacre tells us let the entire GWF be warned, the Gladiators are coming and War is coming within them.
Match 6: Wolf (3) v. Exo-King (6) Great heat as King is trumpeted into the arena. Wolf counters King’s attack with a reverse atomic drop (ch) and downs King with a running clothesline for a 1 count (R9/P3). Wolf comes off the top of the turnbuckle and dives onto King at ringside but King counters with a bear hug and then rams Wolf back first into the steel post! King tangles Wolf in the ropes and batters Wolf until the referee breaks things up. DEATH VISE and Wolf cannot escape (R4/P4).
A montage of Massif’s transition from Power Lifter to wrestler is played including exclusive footage of Omega training the big man.
Match 7: Lord Nexus (4) v. Massif (5) The classic match up of power vs. agility. Massif looks nervous during the introductions making his first appearance in a GWF ring. After a handshake, the match starts with counters. Nexus catches a charging Massif with an elbow to face and follows immediately with a TITAN DROP for the quick win (R3/P3).
We look to the next card. The Title Tournaments will continue at the Victory Gardens on Earth with the upstart team of Executioner & Death Knight taking on The Space Croppers and The Greek Gods battling Vanity & Killer Queen. As well, Commander Sam faces Comrade Terror!
Match 8: Thantos (1) v. Invincible Krakan (8) Huge heat for both men. No one knows what to expect from this one. Thantos showcases his skills early on but Krakan stops him cold with a reverse piledriver for a 1 count (R9/P2). Krakan takes over including trapping Thantos in the ropes and battering the Gamesmaster. Krakan telegraphs a backdrop and pays the price when Thantos counters with a piledriver and immediately applies a MASTERLOCK. Krakan cannot escapes and Thantos advances to the next round (R5/P8).
