WWE just announced at the USA upfront that starting July 23rd that Raw will be expanding to 3 hours every week.
Obviously the WWE staff is toutuing this as a great thing, but I cant agree. They have enough filler in a 2 hour show (like this past Monday), and the recent 3 hour shows just have video packages filling up time and not much extra compelling stuff. I guess it allows for more talent to appear on shows and longer matches in theory. Just not sure that the extra hour brings much to the table. When they did it to Nitro it was the beginning of the end.
What do you all think?

I'd be cool with it if they used that time for more matches or longer matches or character/storyline progression but it isn't often the case.

When they did it to Nitro it was the beginning of the end. What do you all think? From a company perspective, this is a positive. Stripped to what it really is, Raw is the equivalent of a third party funded infomercial. If the USA Network is offering WWE more money and more time, in exchange for more content, then Vince has to jump at it and monetize the opportunity. From the press release, the extra hour will be used to incorporate more social media into the mix, with fans engaged in interactive booking (matches, stips, influencing who is pushed/how talent is used). Ideally the earlier start will gain more of the younger demo (the real target of WWE PG era programming). As long as the first hour holds steady in line with what the lower end hours typically did, it will become a staple. I thought the 'natural' superstar reactions were good for a laugh. ;D Courtesy of WWE.com

Sounds horrid. I mean, there hasn't really been a GOOD 3-hour Raw yet except maybe their return to USA.
I could possibly be on board if this meant the end of Smackdown, but that isn't happening.
Also LOL at how this third hour will allow fans to influence who's being pushed. Sweet Jesus, what a revolutionary idea! That hasn't been done in the first 100 years of wrestling or anything.
Regardless, it's one more reason why Raw is strictly DVR territory all the way.

They certainly have the talent to fill three hours. Personally, I'm hoping this somehow ties into all the big Indy names already in, or coming in (Claudio, Hero, Ambrose, Black etc...) and/or the new and improved cruiser division we heard about a few months ago. Maybe they are making room for new faces and actual wrestling matches. That's my hope at least.

To allow the marks and smarks to fight over who ruins the product faster? Listening to your fans sometimes (and making sure nothing actually changes) is one thing. See the Taboo Tuesdays and such for examples of that. Listening to who the crowds cheer for or boo to determine face/heel status works. But this social media nonsense has got to stop.

Hasn't Raw basically been almost a three hour taping already? Generally they tape one or two Superstar matches before each Raw, and with NXT moving to taping at the University, along with FCW that opens up Smackdown tapings for more Superstar content. So by going to three hours it should in all theory give the lower to mid card guys more live TV time to try and get themselves over, but like most good idea's the WWE has had over the last number of years I am sure they will find a way to mess this up.
