Card #50: "Final Battle V": Chicago, IL (iPPV):ROH matchmaker Nigel McGuinness opens the show by welcoming everyone to the fifth annual Final Battle. Nigel then introduces the promoters that helped to present the show: DJ Hyde (CZW), Gabe Sapolsky (Dragon Gate), Dave Prazak (Shimmer) and Naoki Sugabayashi (NJPW). Nigel says that ROH has truly achieved an international standing and that tonight's show is an international incident of sorts. Nigel says that we have 6+ hours of action on tap and he won't take any more of the fans time as we go to a video recapping Final Battle IV and the events that have lead us to tonight's event.
1.)
CZW Showcase Match: Drake Younger beat
Masada in 8:59 with Drake's Landing. [**1/4]
- Although this was a CZW showcase, the match was contested under traditional wrestling rules. They brawled a lot around the ringside area to compensate for that. Masada controlled Younger early on but crashed and burned on a flying shoulderblock attempt, putting the match firmly in Drake's hands as he put the Ultraviolent Beast away moments later with Drake's Landing.
2.)
Shimmer Showcase Match: Saraya Knight beat
Kimber Lee in 7:31 with the Knightmare. [**]
- Dave Prazak and Allison Danger took over commentary duties from Lenny Leonard and Dave Prazak for this match. Standard match, nothing too impressive. Saraya had the advantage most of the way through and easily picked up the victory over Kimber Lee.
3.)
Tommaso Ciampa with Truth Martini and the Hoopla Hotties beat
Mike Bennett in 6:59 with Project Ciampa. [*3/4]
- Really not a whole lot to this one. Bennett got jumped before the bell by Ciampa and Tommaso beat the living hell out of him for close to seven minutes. Contrary to what you may have expected from this match, there was no Willie Mack or Maria to distract Bennett, it was just Ciampa running through him. Ciampa continued the beatdown after the match, putting Bennett in the corner and hitting several running knees before security and referees finally got Ciampa. out of the ring.
[ROH Year Five Moment] Bryan Danielson records his first successful defense of the ROH World Championship by besting Davey Richards in a classic match! (
Card #41: "Fourth Anniversary Show")
4.)
The House of Truth of Drew Gulak and Uhaa Nation with Truth Martini and the Hoopla Hotties beat
Adrenaline Rush of ACH and TaDarius Thomas,
C&C Wrestle Factory of Caprice Coleman and Cedric Alexander and
Jay Lethal and
Rhett Titus in 12:29 when Gulak used the Spine Splitter on Lethal. [***]
- As the tag team scrambles tend to be, this qas pretty chaotic. Titus and Lethal took the fight to the HoT early on and everyone spilled to the outside, giving ACH the chance to dive out onto everyone, but he was cut off by Cedric Alexander, who threw him to the outside and hit the big dive spot onto everyone. Gulak took over quickly after that and smashed everyone who got in the ring with him. C&C did manage to get him out of the ring and took things over late, but a blind tag lead to the HoT picking up its second win of the night.
[ROH Year Five Moment] AJ Styles submits Samoa Joe with a Calf Killer in his first defense of the ROH Pure Wrestling Championship! (
Card #42: "Northern Navigation")
5.)
#AllEgo Open Challenge: Ethan Page with Seleziya Sparx beat
QT Marshall in 4:21 with the Spinning Dwayne. [*1/2]
- Well...it's QT Marshall, what did you expect? I find it a little suspicious that Page has put out two open challenges now and they've both been 'accepted' by less than top tier guys. I'm calling shenanigans on the whole ordeal. Anyways, he squashed QT Marshall. In other news, water is wet and snow is cold.
6.)
IWGP Jr. Tag Team Championship: The Young Bucks of Nick and Matt Jackson beat
Forever Hooligans of Rocky Romero
and Alex Koslov
(ch) in 18:44 when Matt pinned Koslov after More Bang For Your Buck to become the new champions. [****1/4]
- The first really great match on the show and it's not surprising given the participants. The Bucks started the match out with a double team dive and the pace never let up throughout the entire match. The champions had to fight from behind the whole way through, and never got enough momentum to really have the Bucks in danger. The Bucks hit More Bang For Your Buck on Romero for a near fall, but later in the match Romero couldn't save his partner which lead to the two losing the IWGP Jr. Championship.
After the match, Romero helped Koslov up and as Koslov was leaving the ring, Romero dropkicked Koslov, sending him to the outside. Romero bashed Koslov into all four corners of the barricades before putting him back in the ring and locking in the Diablo Armbar. Romero eventually relinquished the hold and left his apparent former partner in the middle of the ring injured.
[ROH Year Five Moment] Adam Cole becomes the first ever two-time Survival of the Fittest winner, besting Kyle O'Reilly to win the finals of the fifth installment of the tournament! (
Card #43: "Survival of the Fittest V")
7.)
No Holds Barred: Kevin Steen,
El Generico,
Jay Briscoe and
Mark Briscoe beat
OI4K of Jon Moxley, Sami Callihan, Jake Crist and Dave Crist in 19:53 when Steen used a Package Piledriver on Moxley. [***1/2]
- The expected blood and guts match and it went about like you would imagine. This was another match that began during the entrances, but at least this makes sense given that it's a blood feud. Dave Crist took a spike Jay Driller onto a chair early in the match and was pretty much out of the equation for the rest of the bout. Callihan hit a nasty exploder on Generico, dropping him directly on the hardwood floor of the Frontier Fieldhouse. Late in the match, Steen grabbed a chair and went nuts, hitting everyone in OI4K and opening a huge gash in Moxley's forehead. The finish was brutal, as Steen hit the Package Piledriver from the middle rope on Moxley. The babyfaces celebrated after the match and Lenny Leonard put it over as possibly being the last time we see OI4K in ROH.
[ROH Year Five Moment] Generation Next defend the ROH World Tag Titles successfully against New Japan Pro Wrestling's Forever Hooligans in an epic match! (
Card #44: "Motown Showdown")
8.)
Davey Richards and
reDRagon of Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly beat
The Age of the Fall of Jimmy Jacobs, Matt Tremont and Necro Butcher in 13:44 when Richards used the DR Driver on Jacobs. [***]
- Not the war I would have expected it to be, but still a very good match. reDRagon went to war with Tremont and Necro throughout multiple brawls on the floor which saw O'Reilly hit with a chair assisted bodyslam followed by a Cactus elbow from Tremont. Richards teed off on Jacobs from the start of the match and busted Jacobs' mouth open with a shoot kick in the corner. Necro and Davey did mix it up a bit, with Richards landing a DR Driver on Necro for a one count and Necro backing Richards into the corner and bombing some of the most ungodly punches imaginable at him. Two straight matches saw the heel stable fall to the babyfaces...when was the last time
that happened in pro wrestling?
[ROH Year Five Moment] AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels left it all in the ring as they wrestled to a time limit draw in a Pure Championship match! (
Card #45: "Death Before Dishonor V")
9.)
If Edwards loses, he must join Age of the Fall: Eddie Edwards beat
Tyler Black in 21:56 with Die Hard. [***]
- The outcome was somewhat surprising given that Black dominated a lot of the offense in the match, he just never landed God's Last Gift or a Phoenix Splash. Edwards hit a suicide dive late in the match and from there it was all him until the end. Black tried to escape the Achilles lock, only to be dragged back into the ring before rolling Edwards over into a pinning combination to finally escape. Edwards hit Die Hard to put Black away. After the match, Delirious ran in from the crowd and sprayed red mist in Edwards' eyes before leaving through the crowd.
10.)
First Time Ever: Austin Aries beat
Michael Elgin in 22:20 after four consecutive Brainbusters. [****1/2]
- Incredible match that saw Elgin's "Unbreakable" nickname put to the test as Aries tried to drive his head through the mat with four straight brainbusters. Elgin rushed Aries at the start, clubbing at the former Tag Team Champion and trying to put him away early. Aries dodged a clothesline, sending Elgin to the floor and hit the Heat Seeking Missile to take over early in the match. Elgin fought back late, hitting an avalanche Elgin Bomb for a huge near fall. Unfortunately for Elgin, moments later Aries would be thrown to the outside, where he would shove Elgin into the barricade, opening up the opportunity for another Heat Seeking Missile for a near fall. From there, it was four consecutive brainbusters for the mammoth Canadian and Aries would pick up a huge singles win over Elgin. The two shook hands after the match and Aries helped Elgin to the back.
[ROH Year Five Moment] Bryan Danielson defeats one of the all time greats, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, in a phenomenal ROH World Championship match in Philadelphia! (
Card #46: "Best in the World")
11.)
ROH World Tag Team Championship: The Kings of Wrestling of Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli with Shane Hagadorn and Sara del Rey (ch) beat
Generation Next of Roderick Strong and Rich Swann in 16:43 when Hero pinned Strong after KRS-TWO. [****]
- It's hard to follow and epic battle like that last one, but these two teams did a great job of that. Strong and Swann are very much like the old Strong and Jack Evans tag team and they used that to their advantage. Hero fell victim to the End of Heartache early on but a distraction from Shane Hagadorn saved the titles. Swann was taken out late in the match by Swiss Death on the floor from Claudio. Roderick, while a tremendous wrestler in his own right, couldn't take KOW alone and was put away with KRS-TWO as KOW made their fourth defense of the titles.
[ROH Year Five Moment] In a homecoming of sorts, Dayton native Chris Hero and his tag partner Claudio Castagnoli successfully defended the ROH World Tag Team Championship against OI4K's Sami Callihan and Jon Moxley! (
Card #47: "No Way Out")
12.)
Adam Cole beat
Tiger Mask in 14:58 with the Florida Key. [***1/4]
- This didn't quite live up to the previous few matches, but this was still a great outing from both guys. Sayama took the fight to Cole but a missed Space Flying Tiger Drop gave Cole the advantage late and Cole wouldn't relent, putting the Japanese legend away with the Florida Key. Cole got on the mic after the match and said that by Final Battle VI, he would be ROH World Champion.
[ROH Year Five Moment] Adam Cole cashed in his ROH World Championship shot and held Bryan Danielson to a sixty minute time limit draw in one of the best matches of the year! (
Card #48: "Glory By Honor V")
13.)
ROH Pure Wrestling Championship: Christopher Daniels beat
AJ Styles (ch) and
Samoa Joe in 24:49 when he pinned Styles after a Muscle Buster from Joe to become the sixth champion. All three men used all three rope breaks. [****]
- Excellent match with a ton of action, but that's to be expected given the three participants. Both Styles and Daniels went after Joe early on, sending Joe to the outside after a double dropkick. From there, the two hammered at each other until Joe came back in and put them both down with a double lariat. Joe was on offense for much of the middle of this match, hitting both opponents with a Muscle Buster. Late in the match, Joe hit a third Muscle Buster on AJ but was sent from the ring by a missile dropkick from Christopher Daniels, who followed up with the Angels Wings to pick up his first Championship in ROH.
[ROH Year Five Moment] Dragon Gate's Open the Dream Gate Champion, Johnny Gargano, defends his championship against Roderick Strong in a great match before challenging ROH World Champion Bryan Danielson to a match to find out who the best wrestler in the world is! (
Card #49: "Manhattan Mayhem")
14.)
ROH World Championship: Bryan Danielson (ch) beat
Johnny Gargano in 32:27 with Cattle Mutilation. [****3/4]
- Amazing main event that saw Gargano nearly capture the ROH Championship with GargaNo Escape, but Danielson persevered, hitting a dive to the outside to turn the momentum in his favor. Danielson landed a Dragon suplex and followed it up with a flying headbutt for his first near fall. Late in the match, Gargano took the match to the outside and shoved Danielson into the barricade, following up with a running knee to put Danielson's head through one of the ringside barricades. Danielson was nearly counted out, but got in at the count of 19. Gargano attempted to lock in GargaNo Escape one last time, but Danielson countered and rolled Gargano through into Cattle Mutilation. Gargano attempted to escape, but Danielson landed some brutal MMA elbows before applying Cattle Mutilation one final time to retain the championship and put himself in second place for the longest ROH World Championship reign and amount of title defenses. Gargano shook Danielson's hand and Bryan celebrated in the ring to end the show.
