Saturday Night Special and TV taping at UIC Pavilion
Saturday Night Special, AWA #001 Broadcast began with the announcement of a major business deal, consisting of three parts. The Action Hour will remain the flagship show but will also feature a match or two each week from the road to showcase the different matches in the different cities on the tour. The second part will feature the rebranding of the organization as the All-Star Wrestling Association (AWA). From this point forward, Lou Thesz is the AWA Heavyweight Champion, Brian Christopher is the AWA Light Heavyweight Champion and Blackjack Mulligan and Barry Windham as the AWA Tag-Team Champions. The final piece of the puzzle is the co-op between the current roster and a prominent Midwestern-based circuit of grapplers. The reigning Americas Champion of that region is Larry Zbyszko but the AWA will recognize Lou Thesz as the only heavyweight titleholder. More news on this and the debut of the live broadcast in the coming weeks. Now onto the action . . . Hawk and Animal (with Paul Ellering) def. Ivan Koloff and Boris Zhukov (with Hammerhead). Big classic showdown here concluded when Animal used a POWERSLAM to pin Ivan. Best-of-three falls for AWA Title: Lou Thesz swept Randy Savage in a classic match with a disputed finish in each fall. A GRECO ROMAN BACKDROP had both men's shoulders to the mat but the referee ruled Thesz lifted his arm. Savage also looked like he motioned his arm but the decision stood. An irate Savage rallied in the second fall, but Thesz pulled out the STF where Savage struggled to escape. A second STF had Savage barely returning to the ring as he took a breather on the floor. Thesz pulled him back in and used a series of dropkicks to pin the Macho Man! However, controversy continued as while Savage was KO'd he apparently had a foot outside the ropes. When Savage came to he grabbed the mike and blasted the officials, champions and fans then threw the mike down in disgust. Magnum TA W-DQ over David Taylor. The British suplex master kept things on the mat but it was Magnum who used the vertical suplex frequently. Taylor slid, snuck and twisted his way out of each attempt raising Magnum's temper. TA also peppered in the fisticuffs between suplexes. Taylor slammed a chair into the back of Magnum stopping the match. The Squire grabbed the mike and asked "how is this fair? He brawls and breaks the rules and I get DQ'd for retaliation? - Disgusting!!" Six Man Dream Match - Dude Brohan, Enormous Pierre and Rob Van Dam W-DQ over Bruiser Brody, Jimmy Snuka and King Kong Bundy. Pierre barely got into the match but the other five showcased some of their signature moves. Snuka slammed the Dude into the announce table, leading to the DQ. Dude and Snuka have signed to face 1-1 later in the taping.
The results of the taping are coming next.
AWA Roll Call of ChampionsHeavyweight Title: Lou Thesz Tag-Team Titles: Blackjack Mulligan and Barry Windham Light-Heavyweight Title: Brian Christopher (unrecognized) Americas Title: Larry Zbyszko

Wrestling News Bulletin:
Some names for the upcoming Ultimate League Tag-Team Tournament were announced. One strange team is Larry Zbyszko and former MMA-star Clinch. Apter openly wondered how Zbyszko convinced a loner like Clinch to team up in this tournament. Before we explore that mystery, Apter had a big announcement from federation central. Before he could say anything else, Apter was then interrupted by Larry Zbyszko who had former MMA star Clinch in tow along with a mysterious masked man in a golden mask.
Bill Apter asked him about this partnership and the masked man who was lurking behind the Larry at the interview area.
Zbyszko: "I will start with the masked Golden Cobra. You see, the Golden Cobra is my insurance policy against all the backjumpers, thugs and cheap-shot artists running around here. He will make sure opponents and referees are kept in line and give us a fair shake. He will also act as an alternate in the event we need a substitute. The three of us have formed Fight Force, a special alliance with a common goal. Since the Cobra's body is a lethal weapon it is best to keep his identity a secret to retain some privacy with his other business ventures."
Apter: "Sounds like intimidation."
Zbyszko: "Intimidation?!? , that is everyone else's problem. Our problem is getting to the top of the wrestling world as fast as possible. Clinch and Cobra are going to help me get there in record time. No more roadblocks, sidetracks or railroading. Clinch jumped at the chance to even the score as the singles champions around here were all afraid of this man. Look at him, his hands and feet are weapons. The light heavyweight division has deemed him too big and rough while that sneaky Thesz always had to arrange special stipulations to cheat this man of the world title."
Apter: "Thanks for the insight Larry but when did this discussion with Clinch take place?"
Zbyszko: "A couple of months back when I saw some of the so-called losses this man took. I arranged a meeting with special training sessions to work as a team. We even took a brief tour of the Orient to shake things up there. Unfortunately, I had other obligations that did not allow me to team up in North America until now."
Apter: "Could you elaborate on those obligations?"
Zbyszko: "You know the answer, Spudhead. Do not play dumb - it was MONEY. The big announcement was supposed to surprise the wrestling world as Superstar Pro bought up wrestlers contracts in the Midwest. This includes yours truly, the Americas Heavyweight Champion. The merger deal also came with the stipulation to the name of a new corporation: The All-star Wrestling Association, AWA. That is right, you heard it. A new beginning around here, and I will not only win the tag-team belts, but am guaranteed a title shot against Thesz. You see, he is wrestling on borrowed time as retirement is around the corner now that I am here with my 17 glorious years. I am destined to become a dual title-holder, one way or the other!" (A messenger passes Apter a note to read on-air)
Apter: "Excuse me Larry, while I read this urgent message regarding this merger."
Zbyszko: "This is my interview time, but go for it Spudhead, probably a bunch of red tape anyway"
Apter: "While what Mr. Zbyszko said is true regarding the reorganization, he has not mentioned the usual title obligations he has before his match with Thesz. He will get the shot as long as he is Americas champion but must defend the title regularly or else is stripped."
Zbyszko: "That is right, am signed to face both Jake Milliman and Kenny Jay in my next two matches."
Apter: "The print at the bottom of the note states, that a special announcement will reveal the top contender, after the tag-team tournament. Welcome to the Action Hour, Mr. Zbyszko. See you all at ringside."
(Zbyszko yelled some expletive inaudibly and then stormed off the set with his crew)

Episodes 001d Exotic Adrian Street and Gorgeous George (with Linda and Cherie) upset the Rock & Roll Express. Another element of the British invasion was on display as the Exotic One belies his appearance and used a combo of roughouse tactics with mat work to keep the music to a murmur. George polished off Robert with his ROLLING HIPLOCKS. George and Street looked like they have teamed forever with this display!
Marty Jannetty W-DQ over Jerry Lynn in a light-heavyweight challenge. Lynn got too extreme in this exciting bout.
Superfly Snuka W-DQ over Dude Brohan as the Dude got some payback for the out-of-control attack Snuka laid down on the Saturday Night Special six-man. These two have signed for a cage match to settle things!
LHW Champion Brian Christopher fought a non-title match against Rad Racer. This time Rad Racer seemed a little taller with a slightly different body type. Christopher was thrown for a loop and after the masked man hit the ROCKER DROPPER a 2.5 count he lost it. The referee DQ'd the champion and the Rad Racer unmasked to reveal Marty Jannetty. The evening concluded with that surprise!

This edition of the Wrestling News Bulletin has Bill Apter hosting Americas Champion Larry Zbyszko (with Fight Force) on a breakdown of the Ultimate Tag Team League Tournament Field.
Apter: "We will focus on that big tournament as we will not mention the events of the last bulletin.
Zbyszko: "Whatever the topic I am ready. This tournament is lopsided already as my Fight Force has the advantage on all of these teams. For starters, we have the champions: a pair of father-son crybabies who barely can find the ring without a road map. One is crying for Daddy and the other is too drunk on cheap Texas beer to walk straight, never mind wrestle. The Fight Force is dedicated and disciplined to our business. "
"Then we have the Road Warriors and if it wasn't for that stooge Ellering spouting instructions every two minutes, they could barely think. Speaking of thinking, we have teams like the Russians, Sheepherders and Vachons whose toughest opponents are the English language and common sense. We are the smartest team in the field with our combined years of fighting knowledge."
"Then you have pathetic geezers like Bockwinkel and Stevens, who are undefeated in matches starting before 8:30. You see the rest home has to cart them out of the arena so they can get tucked into bed on time. Please do not get me started on wimps like the Flying Red Heads or Jim Brunzell with Armstrong. We have more desire than all of those teams combined."
Apter: " There are a few teams we did not discuss, care to comment?"
Zbyszko: "There are three points really on the remaining teams. First we have a group of posers and pretenders. Teams like the Blade Blasters or whatever you want to call them. You can lump these prima donnas with teams like Gorgeous George with Adrian Street along with the New Bloods. All three teams pretend to act like things they are not."
Apter: "Care to elaborate?"
Zbyszko: "Oh yeah sure, we all know the Spudheads out there need everything spelled out. Buzzsaw and Lazer pretend they know how to wrestle but all they know how to do is paint their face and pound people. They show little skill and conveniently do not have any. Then we have the New Bloods - who mention their royal heritage such as cousins, aunts and uncles, yeah yeah, yeah. Their lineage does as much for them as a new paint job on a trash can. Sure it looks good, but everyone knows it is still garbage. Street and George have the same mentality as the others but they made their careers of throwing people off. The Fight Force needs no theatrics, no face paint and no costumes. We are the real deal and true warriors!"
"The second group are teams like the Midnight Express with Jim Cornette and JJ Dillon's squad. These teams have one thing in common: reliance on outside interference. Those teams are on notice if they plan to stick their noses in our business. Who would you rather have watching your back? Some loudmouth with a tennis racket who is not an athlete , some washed-up has-been wrestler like Dillon or a human weapon like Cobra? Is this even a fair comparison ? We are proven with our dedication to our sport, not tennis courts or cocktail hours."
Finally, we have #1 International Contenders Hansen and Brody, whatever that means. Yes, they are a tough team, yes we have faced them before in Japan, and yes we did not beat them but they did not beat us either. Maybe here in the states we will not get some hack referee who was instructed to protect the company investments. We will see what happens in Denver as my 17 glorious years will prevail."
Apter: "Thanks for your time, Larry. See you at ringside!
Zbyszko: "The pleasure was yours, spudhead."

Brunzell made a save off the LARIAT, but near pins with Sleepers from both Armstrong & Brunzell extended the match to the limit. A bit of an upset to begin the tournament as both teams are eliminated. #7-Bockwinkel & Stevens over #10-Hennigs , Bockwinkel wasted little time and worked over Curt with a wicked forearm and then trapped him into an extended Abdominal Stretch and finished with the BOCKWINKEL SLEEPER. #14- New Blood (Taylor & Regal) WDQ #3- Adrian Street/Gorgeous George. Too much traffic from the ladies at ringside led to the DQ. #6-Blade Blasters over #11- Doctor Death & Ted Dibiase. An ULTIMATE COMBO on Doc moved the "brothers in paint" to the Quarterfinals. #8- Vachons over #9- Flying Redheads in a bloodbath. Bastien was split open and could not tag out for most of the bout. Lyons finally made the tag and rallied but a PILEDRIVER finished the night. What a battle! #4- Midnight Express over #13-Fight Force. The Midnights teamwork went on display as the fighting tactics of Zbyszko and Clinch were neutralized in a tag-team format. A Neckbreaker did in Zbyszko after extensive double-team moves. Larry Legend was not a happy camper with this decision. #5- Road Warriors WDQ #12-Sheepherders. This wild and wooly affair was a brief but intense brawl. After saving Luke from a DOOMSDAY DEVICE, all four men brawled in the ring. The Sheepherders would not follow tag rules, forcing a DQ. The Final 3 rounds of Ultimate Tag League II in Denver, CO
= Quarterfinals = #1 seed, Tag-Team Champions Blackjack Mulligan and Barry Windham d. The Vachon Brothers. Windham cracked out the BLACKJACK CLAW on Mad Dog to advance to the SEMIS. The Vachons round 1 war with the Redheads clearly took its toll as the brothers were sluggish against the champs.
Midnight Express WDQ Road Warriors. The Warriors won and lost by DQ in the tournament. This time their tempers got the better of them after Paul Ellering wrestled Jim Cornette's tennis racket away from him. Ellering passed it to Hawk, who used it on Cornette with Lane and Eaton earning DQ and an unpopular decision.
Nick Bockwinkel and Crippler Stevens earned a bye due to the time limit draw between Hansen & Brody vs. Armstrong & Brunzell.
The Blade Blasters, Lazer and Buzzsaw d. The New Blood. Lazer & Buzzsaw tore through the Royalty here as a LAZERLOCK on Regal punched a ticket to the Semis for the Blasters.
=-Semifinals-= Midnight Express d. Windham & Mulligan to win the titles. A VEGOMATIC almost pinned Jack but the Express followed up with a MIDNIGHT SEESAW for the pin. According to the rules of the tournament, the titles are on the line in every match as the Express regained the gold!
The Blade Blasters d. Bockwinkel & Stevens with Bobby Heenan. Heenan's Family kept themselves out of trouble with some timely pin saves but the Blasters muscled their way to the finals as Lazer pinned Bockwinkel after a Superplex. Impressive outing by Buzzsaw and Lazer, especially Lazer who brought his "A-game" to Denver.
== Finals == Midnight Express won the Ultimate Tag-League Tournament II and regained the Tag-Team Championship with a win over the Blade Blasters.
The exciting run was over for the Blasters but not before the usual thrills. First, referee Morgan Dollar ejected Jim Cornette stating to the crowd "Cornette will not have a chance to factor into this match as he is banned from ringside for this match. The winners of the tournament will have to earn this two-on-two."
Cornette was livid, the crowd was ecstatic and the Blasters were determined. Unfortunately, the Express were focused and used their cohesive teamwork to throw the Blasters off-balance. A VEGOMATIC on BuzzSaw topped an awesome night of action!
Bill Apter conducted an in-ring interview with the winners and Jim Cornette who returned after the match. Amazingly, Cornette kept his victory speech short and sweet: "They stacked the decked against us since we lost the titles but tonight we climbed the mountain and knocked a few other teams down it. Now it is time to celebrate, celebrate and celebrate. Let's go boys, Momma is waiting. "
A quick rundown of the champions within the All-Star Wrestling Association (AWA):
AWA Tag-Team Champions - The Midnight Express (Eaton & Lane)
AWA World Heavyweight Champion: Lou Thesz
AWA Light Heavyweight Champion: Brian Christopher
Americas Champion: Larry Zbyszko (not officially recognized)
