Card 57 - Westchester County Civic Center, White Plains, NY
Frank Dalton & Tommy Gilbert def. Texas Hangmen by disqualification when Psycho used his bull rope to choke out Dalton - ***. This was an intense, evenly matched all heel tag team battle to get the night going with a bang as both sides had stretches in control before things broke down during a brawl on the floor. Konnan def. “Iron” Mike DiBiase with a tombstone piledriver - ** ½. Another back and forth battled with the Lucha skills of Konnan giving Konnan the slight advantage as both men avoided each other finishers and the match ended with a piledriver in the middle of the ring. Mikey Whipwreck def. Killer Kowalski with a tornado DDT - **. In what must be considered a significant upset, Whipwreck used his speed to keep his much larger opponent on the defensive. Kowalski managed to survive back to back WHIPPER SNAPPERS at one point but just was not able to slow Whipwreck down for a long enough stretch to do some serious damage. Iron Sheik & The Soviets (Alexis Smirnoff & Nikolai Volkoff) battled Johnny Valentine, B.G. James & Barry Windham to a double disqualification - *. This one ended quickly as all six men started to brawl after Windham connected with a LARIAT on Smirnoff after only a few minutes. The action carried on after the bell with Valentine, Windham & James eventually clearing the ring. Buddy Rogers def. Jimmy Snuka by disqualification for brawling on the floor - **. Morgan Dollar had strict instructions for both competitors and the Nature Boy was able to goat Snuka into several brawls on the floor and made it appear Snuka was the aggressor by begging off until Dollar had finally seen enough. The fans and Superfly were not impressed after the bell as Rogers quickly escaped ringside with a controversial win over a top contender. Vachons (Mad Dog Vachon & Butcher Vachon) def. Flying Redheads (Red Bastien & Billy Red Lyons) in a Texas Tornado Match when Mad Dog Vachon pinned Bastien with a double foot stomp - ****. This was nuts from start to finish with loads of weapons coming into play as the action battled back and forth with plenty of pin saves. All four men were busted open by the time Mad Dog ended. World Champion Ted DiBiase def. Al Snow with a sleeper - **. Snow had the fans on the edge of the their seats when he controlled the action from the opening bell and appeared to have DiBiase finished with a SNOW PLOW but DiBiase kicked out the last possible second and then countered a deathjump cross body with a roll through (with a handful of tights) to turn the match momentum leading to his victory. Showdown at Shea (#60), Shea Stadium, Flushing, NY Steel Cage Match for the World Title – Ted DiBiase (ch) v. Jimmy Snuka AWA World Title – Nick Bockwinkel (ch) v. Card 58 - National Arena, Washington DC
“Exotic” Adrian Street & Gorgeous George w/Cherie Dupré def. Too Cool (Brian Christopher & Scott Taylor) when George used a SPINNING TOEHOLD on Taylor - ** ½. This was an intense battle from start to finish that featured not one but two periods of all four men brawling. Christopher rocked the fans with a sunset flip powerbomb to the floor but in the end, Taylor was cut off from his Christopher for too long and had no choice but to submit to George’s finisher.
Buddy Rogers def. Mikey Whipwreck with a FIGURE FOUR GRAPEVINE - *. Whipwreck had the fans behind him but Nature Boy unleashed all his weapons tonight and an overwhelmed Whipwreck and this one ended rather quickly. Jackie Fargo def. Killer Kowalski with an ATOMIC DROP - *. Fargo was able to get the advantage and then land his finisher. Kowalski manages to kick out but Fargo wisely hits a second atomic drop to get the surprising victory. Steve Corino def. Jack Brisco with a sitout power bomb – dud. This one lasted just five moves and ended with a huge victory for Corino (snake eyes). The fans were stunned as Corino gloated his way to the back.
Johnny Valentine def. Iron Sheik with an ATOMIC SKULLCRUSHER - *** ½. Valentine was beaten to a bloody mess and survived a CAMEL CLUTCH before he mounted an impressive comeback dishing out is own brand of punishment finishing off Sheik with an elbow. World Tag Team Champions Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) w/Paul Ellering def. Larry Hennig & Hugh Morrus when Hawk pinned Morrus after a DOOMSDAY DEVICE – dud. Morgan Dollar had strict instructions for both teams before the bell but it did not matter because this one was over in two moves!
In a Steel Cage Match, Pampero Firpo def. Vampiro after running him into the cage wall - ***. Vamprio looked like he would just walk away with an easy victory as he battered Firpo in to a bloody mess but Firpo mounted a comeback and by the end of the match both men were bleeding profusely and whip into the cage wall was enough to finish it. Showdown at Shea (#60), Shea Stadium, Flushing, NY

Always a lot of fun, my friend... That cage match between Firpo and Vampiro looked like a grueling affair... Which leads me to ask a question that I'm certain has come your way before - Maybe even from me, but I cannot remember the response if it has... How do you come up with your star ratings for each match? Do you have a system or is it completely subjective? I've tried to rate matches in the past and found that I was actually spending way too much time agonizing over every little detail.

Vampiro vs. Firpo in a Loser Leaves Town Dog Collar Match?!?! Oh, snap! I am in full agreement my friend. I like both guys so it will be difficult seeing one of them forced out of the promotion. That Shea Stadium lineup is great, looking forward to the results.

Thanks for the feedback TTX , Pariah and cruefan68 . As far as the match rating, I start with the total fatigue for the competitors and then divide the total in half. That is the starting point only. From their, I subjectively move the ranking up or down based on how competitive the back and forth was aside from pinfall attempts, how exciting the action would have been if I had witnessed the action live. I also add ½ star for any crimson that flows. Card 59 - Zembo Mosque, Harrisburg, PA Princess Victory def. Francine with a CROSS BODY BLOCK - ****. This was a crazy opener with the referee getting knocked out of the action not once but twice (the second time for 11 moves!) but Victoria drew on the fans support to survive the chaos and get the win with her victory. Toni Rose & Beverly Shade def. Susan Green & Malia Hosaka when Shade pinned Green after a full body slam – dud. Rose and Shade cut off Green from the opening bell with a series of punches to the midsection from both ladies wearing out Green before Shade finisher her off. Tina Moretti def. Candi Divine by disqualification when Divine used a chair on Moretti - *. Both competitors really needed a win in this one to move up the rankings and Divine dominated the match from the bell nearly putting away Moretti with a SUNSET FLIP before the action spilled to the floor where Moretti grabbed a chair only to have Divine take it away and use it. It was a costly choice as the referee called for the bell and Moretti, who had zero offensive the entire match, picked up the win. Madison Rayne def. Melina with a boot to head - **. Both wrestlers countered to near perfection at the outset which built the match intensity but it was Rayne who was able to capitalize first with a power slam followed immediately with a boot that downed Melina for the three count. Trish Stratus & Nora Greenwald def. Glamour Girls (Leilani Kai & Judy Martin) when Greenwald used a snap suplex on Martin - ** ½. An excellent back and forth battle but Greenwald was the real standout tonight dominating her opponents when she was in the ring and it was only fitting she picked up the pin when she caught Martin with high impact snap suplex. Mildred Burke def. Sherri Martel with an ALLIGATOR CLUTCH - *** ½. It was announced that the winner of this match would battle for the Women’s Title at Showdown at Shea and Martel used all her tricks early on in an effort to get the victory and the title shot but Burke managed to just kick out of two near falls before she took control of the later half of the match and showcased her many skills before getting the win. Women’s Champion Fabulous Moolah def. Jazz with a BODY PRESS - **. Jazz showed she was in Harrisburg to collect gold trapping the champion in a BITCH CLAMP but Moolah, by luck alone, managed to just touch the ropes with her foot and the referee demanded a break. Moolah attempted to goat her challenger to the floor but Jazz was up to the task but Moolah showed her experience with a SMALL PACKAGE for a two count and then immediately struck with her finisher (hooking some tights for good measure) to retain the belt (snake eyes!). Moolah was quick to get out of ringside leaving Jazz frustrated in the ring and the fans wanting a rematch between the two sooner rather than later. Showdown at Shea (#60), Shea Stadium, Flushing, NY

Card 60 – Showdown at Shea, Shea Stadium, Flushing, New York
Frank Dalton & Tommy Gilbert def. Texas Hangmen (Killer & Psycho) when Dalton used a scorpion death lock on Killer - *****. This was a classic and kicked the night off with a bang. The Hangmen looked like they would cruise to a victory after cutting off Gilbert for a long time unleashing a brutal double team attack the lead to a HANGMEN BACKBREAKER but a key pin save by Dalton kept the action going. Both teams would exhaust their pin saves as Gilbert & Dalton battled back cutting of first Killer for a stretch and then Psycho. An ATOMIC DROP and a RUNNING KNEE LIFT did not get the job done and by the finish the Hangmen were clearly sucking air as Dalton locked in the submission hold on Killer for the win. Steve Corino def. Konnan with an OLD SCHOOL EXPULSION – dud. Steve Corino continued his impressive run with a dominating victory in this one hitting his finisher twice and also picking up near falls after a pair of superkicks. Jackie Fargo def. Killer Kowalski with an ATOMIC DROP - ***. This was a short and violent encounter that spilled in and out of the ring. Kowalski struck early with an overhead body slam for a near fall in the opening seconds but once things went to the floor Fargo found his element and dominated the balance of the action including hitting Kowalski with a steel chair. Vachons (Mad Dog Vachon & Butcher Vachon) def. World Tag Team Champions Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) w/Paul Ellering when Mad Dog Vachon used PILEDRIVER on Hawk - **. The Vachons are all over Morgan Dollar before the bell and the official is not pleased with their action and issues the challengers a warning even before the action gets underway. The Vachons struck at the bell with a double team attack but Animal powered his way out of trouble tossing around both Mad Dog and Butcher Vachon. Hawk kept the attack going and it looked as if the Vachons would be quickly dispatched but another double team attack on Hawk turned the momentum and Mad Dog quickly capitalized with his finisher. Animal’s pin save was blocked and Ellering was not able to cause a distraction.
Johnny Valentine def. Iron Sheik by disqualification when Sheik smashed Valentine with Dr. Mike Lano’s spare camera - * ½. Valentine was able to turn the early momentum of the Sheik and then uses a series of sleepers and forearms to rattle the Iranian and force the battle to the floor. Outside, Sheik grabbed the camera and left Valentine bloodied and dazed on the ground.
Jack Brisco def. Buddy Rogers with a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK - *. Brisco just appeared to be a step ahead of Rogers from the outset finding a counter to everything that the Nature Boy could come up with in this rather short contest that ended when Brisco trapped Rogers in the middle of the ring and Morgan Dollar called for the bell (snake eyes!). Rogers complained after the bell that he did not submit but the decision stands and Brisco has a major, much needed, victory. Pampero Firpo def. Vampiro in a Loser Leaves Town Dog Collar Match with a EL GARFIO - ** ½. The loser of the this one was gone for 30 cards! The fans were on edge as the two competitors were collared and the action got underway. Firpo was the aggressor and made use of the weapon first but Vampiro was able to pull Firpo into the ring post and both men were a bloody mess. It was back and forth until both men went for a clothesline with the chain at the same time and crashed to the mat. Firpo recovered first and soon trapped Vampiro in his finisher to sent him packing.
Curt Hennig def. A.W.A World Champion Nick Bockwinkel w/Bobby “The Brian” Heenan with a standing dropkick to win the title - ****. This was a classic that built slowly from the opening bell with Hennig gaining the early advantage with a series of rolling neck snaps and a pair of near falls. Bockwinkel targeted the leg in his comeback and nearly retained the title after a vicious looking back suplex. The action went back and forth until Hennig was able to catch Bockwinkel clear on the chin with his dropkick and Morgan Dollar made three count for the second title change of the night (snake eyes!). Larry Hennig and Hugh Morrus come to the ring to celebrate Hennig’s title win.
Larry Hennig & Hugh Morrus def. “Exotic” Adrian Street & Gorgeous George w/ Cherie Dupré when Hennig used THE AXE on Street - ** ½. Another solid back and forth battle with Hennig & Morrus looking to carry on the momentum of Curt Hennig’s Title victory. George and Street pulled out all the stops in an effort to get the win including some timely interference from Dupré that upset ringside and George cracking Morrus with a chair but in the end Morrus and Hennig had too many weapons tonight. Flying Redheads (Red Bastien & Billy Red Lyons) def. Barry Windham & B.G. James when Bastien pinned Windham with an ATOMIC DROP - * ½. Handshakes started this one off and the back and forth had the fans rocking early on. Windham looked to have the upper hand on Lyons but Lyons turned things around locking in a SLEEPERHOLD and then a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK. Windham just survived both and was weakened enough that Bastien was able to land back to back deathjump smashes and an ATOMIC DROP for the win. Women’s Champion Fabulous Moolah def. Mildred Burke with a dropkick - *** ½. There was some incredible intensity early on this one with plenty of brawling on the floor. Bruke showed no mercy running Moolah into the post at one pine and later nearly getting the count out win after a suplex on the floor. Moolah regrouped and battled blow for blow with her challenger with a series of headbutts and back to back dropkicks to get the three count from Morgan Dollar. Jimmy Snuka def. Ted DiBiase to win the title in a Steel Cage Match with a SUPERFLY LEAP - *. Morgan Dollar was the official in charge and DiBiase had some words for Dollar which made Dollar hot under the collar. Snuka and DiBiase exchanged blows at the bell and Superfly countered a knee to the stomach and took control of the action with a lead frog and chop. A backbreaker downed DiBiase and Snuka scaled the cage wall and crushed DiBiase with his finisher to win back the title in less than ten moves!
Official Rankings World Champion: Jimmy Snuka (1) 1. Ted DiBiase (WC) 2. Pampero Firpo (9) 3. Buddy Rogers (7) 4. Steve Corino (8) 5. Al Snow (2) 6. Killer Kowalski (6) 7. Mikey Whipwreck (5) 8. Jack Brisco (10) 9. Jackie Fargo (-) 10. Iron Sheik (4)
