AWA All Star WrestlingLarry Nelson opened the show and welcomed the new tag team champions, the Texas Hangmen. He brought up the controversial end of their championship match when a third Hangman showed up to assist. Killer and Psycho shouted him down and insisted there are only two of them (*even though we know there are three, because Hangman Strangler made a brief appearance when they were in Atlanta back in 2021). Larry said, regardless of all that, the first match tonight will definitely have title implications as Rose and Somers take on the Flying Redheads in a return match from their previous encounter. Red Bastien and Billy Red Lyons won by disqualification over Buddy Rose and Doug Somers. The Reds controlled this one. Rose rolled out for a breather, but Lyons gave chase. Somers attacked Lyons from behind with a chair and got disqualified. Prior to the next match Larry Zbyszko said dream time is over for Jake Miliman and it's back to reality thanks to Saito. Then Trooper is next. Masa Saito defeated Jake Miliman with the SAITO SUPLEX.Jake brought the fight to Saito at the bell and rocked him with some good blows. Saito withstood and ended it with the suplex in about three minutes. The Trooper got in the ring after the bell and guarded Jake while Larry taunted. Trooper stepped up to get in Larry's face, but was cut off by Saito. Saito and Trooper stared each other down as AWA referees and officials jumped in to make sure the situation didn't escalate. Alexis Smirnoff beat Tony Atlas after the HEART PUNCH.Hard hitting action. Boris was at ringside and provided crucial distraction after Tony hit the GORILLA PRESS SLAM and went for the pin. The bout continued for several more mnutes. In the end Boris got a few shots in on the floor and Tony rolled back in to the HEART PUNCH and pin. Bruiser Brody mauled Kenny Jay.Not much to this one. Brody beat him up for a few minuted and pinned him after the jumping knee drop. Following the match Brody talked to a trembling Larry Nelson. Brody said Doctor X is here claiming he wants a world title shot, saying he's got no flaws in his wrestling style. He fights fast guys, strong guys, but he hasn't fought Bruiser Brody and Brody will be standing by to see what happens tonight when Doctor X faces Larry Hennig. Doctor X beat Larry Hennig with the FIGURE FOUR.Hennig could not bully his way to the win here, as X seemed to have a counter for everything Hennig threw at him. In the end X wore down his opponent and got the win with the figure four in about eight minutes. Following the main event, X spoke with Nelson at ringside. He said he heard what Brody said and now everyone has seen what Doctor X does. So we have to decide what we value here: words or actions. Doctor X finished by saying he has faced high flying wrestlers, brute strength wrestlers, and he will face the most uncontrollable brawler if necessary if it gets him one step closer to the world champion.

CWA Wrestlingw/Lance Russell Lance opened the show with the big announcement that matchmaker Eddie Marlin has declared that, after the big win at the Fairgrounds over his two heated rivals, Fabulous Jackie Fargo is the next in line for a shot at Southern champ Bill Dundee. Furthermore, there's no reason to keep the fans waiting and that match happens on this very show. Eddie Gilbert came out to assume his co-host position, which Lance quickly pointed out he no longer has after getting fired from the job not being able to keep his nose out of the action. Gilbert ignored that and said what happened in Nashville was an injustice but the Gilbert family begins making up for it today when Doug takes out Dutch Mantell. Then it's on to singles and tag team glory, and no championship is safe. Doug Gilbert beat Dutch Mantell thanks to help from Eddie.A very good opening contest marred by a controversial ending. Eddie of course got involved in the action, but Dutch ally Brickhouse Brown tried to come out to even the sides, but was intercepted by Koko B Ware. Ware and Brickhouse argued by the curtain as Eddie tripped Dutch from ringside allowing Doug to his a superkick and get the pin. An angry Dutch grabbed his trusty whip and chased the Gilberts away as Jimmy Hart went over to Lance and said the Gilberts are a great wrestling family, but his First Family are the dominant force in wrestling today (baby). Lance countered that they did not look so hot in Nashville and up next Tony Anthony has a chance to save face as he goes one on one with one half of the tag team champions, Ricky Morton.Ricky Morton (w/Robert Gibson) pinned Tony Anthony (w/Jimmy Hart) with a CROSS BODY BLOCK. Before the bout Eddie Marlin strictly forbid Anthony from having Hart and his tag partner Len Denton at ringside, so Denton had to leave. Robert was able to negate Hart's influence at ringside and Ricky absorbed a great deal of punishment before he made his comeback and got the win in about six minutes. Koko Ware demolished The Masked Rebel.Koko wasted no time beating the masked journeyman. He hit the ring and hit a running corner splash before the Rebel knew what happened. A TOP ROPE DROPKICK later and it was a two move win for Koko.Lance called Koko over and wanted answers for his recent behavior since coming back to the territory. Koko said he doesn't owe anybody and explanation for anything but maybe he's owed a little more than he's been given. Dutch Mantell confronted Koko and said he doesn't know what the attitude problem is all about, but he's getting in Brickhouse Brown's ear and he seems to have a problem with Dutch Mantell, so if he wants a little stiffer competition maybe he'd better show up next week and the Dutchman can give him all he can handle. Koko accepted with a not so subtle "See you next week, whip cracker." (subtle emphasis on the last word) After the break Chick Donovan made his entrace as only he can, stunning the fans into silence with his dance moves and histrionics. Austin Idol beat Chick Donovan via LAS VEGAS LEGLOCK.An excellent back and forth match. Idol wore down the knee and legs of Chick before finally getting his version of the figure four for the victory. Afterwards Idol said Jimmy Hart's First Family is looking a little worse for wear these days and maybe he'd better go away and rethink his gameplan. He then put the focus squarely on himself as the presumptive next challenger no matter who wins tonight between Jackie Fargo and Bill Dundee. Superstar Bill Dundee beat Fabulous Jackie Fargo to defend the Southern title in a tremendous match. Both men gave everything they have, but in the end it was the champ's advantage with the SUPERSTAR BOMB and pin. Fargo kicked out JUST after the three count to end a valiantly fought title match. Superstar ended the show by thanking Fargo for a worthy challenge and said he's either lucky to make it out as champ or he's just as good as he says he is, and he'll let someone else decide. Superstar concluded by saying he's been in the ring with Austin Idol numerous times so he knows what Idol is made of, and if Eddie Marlin decides h's next in line then so be it. The Superstar will be ready.

World Championship Wrestlingw/ Tony Schiavone and David Crockett Tony opened the show by saying we'd see a big main event as US champion Tommy Rich faces the challenge of Outlaw Ron Bass. But the big news is that Tommy will finally get his world title match at the big New Year's Pro Wrestling USA super show. The world champion will be here later with his reaction. But first, the Fabulous Ones. Steve and Stan joined the broadcast team and Steve spoke first. He said Rock Riddle thinks he has the permanent rights to tag team title matches, but his new men Studd and Bundy have to get through the Fabulous Ones first later tonight and that's easier said than done. Stan said Studd and Bundy are big, but they're slow, and most importantly, they're not Fabulous. Sill E Donkey (w/Jimmy Valiant) defeated Keith Steinborn. The donkey's antics nearly cost him, as Keith actually got in some offense for once. In the end it was a side saddle drop and pin to give the....donkey the victory. David was loving it once again as Jimmy and Donkey went over and chased Tony around for a few seconds before talking. David asked if Donkey was some sort of mascot or what. Jimmy said he's an animal man from the Andromeda star system daddy (Tony was skeptical), and he's here to get his hooves on Manny Fernandez and JJ Dillon. Jimmy was excited to announce they'll get the chance at the New Year's eve show when it's Jimmy and Donkey versus Bull and Dillon. Thunderbolt Patterson came out and carried on with Jimmy and Donkey for a moment before getting serious. He said Redd Dogg came out and said nobody should forget him, shouldn't overlook him, and he's right. Nobody can forget how he turned his back on the USA and went with the Russians and no one should overlook the fact that he deserves a beating for it. A beating Thunderbolt is ready to give. Thunderbolt Patterson won by countout over Redd Dogg Rodney Mack. The match was a fight from start to finish. Once Thunderbolt kicked it into high gear, Mack decided he had enough and bailed on the match to take the countout. Big John Studd and King Kong Bundy defeated The Fabulous Ones when Studd put Stan away with the backbreaker. The Fabs had Studd and Bundy off kilter with their superior agility, but once the big men got hold of the smaller opponents it was all over. Riddle celebrated the win and said the Fabulous Ones are one of the premier teams in all of wrestling, and his men just beat them clean. He warned that Slaughter and Kernodle had their lucky day but the luck has run out once Studd and Bundy catch up to them. Bob Backlund (w/Arnold Skaaland) won by disqualification over Kharis the Mummy.Backlund conferred with Skaaland before the bell and whatever he said worked because Bob had Mummy beat in the opening minute with the ATOMIC DROP. HOWEVER, James Mitchell got involved and hit Bob over the back to break the pin. Skaaland got in and knocked Mitchell's lights out, and the Sinister Minister and Mummy retreated. US champion Tommy Rich defeated Outlaw Ron Bass.Bass took the fight to Rich and got a near fall with the TEXAS STAMPEDE. Rich rallied and got the pin with a THESZ PRESS. After the bout world champion Nick Bockwinkel and Bobby Heenan talked to Tony and David. Heenan said Rich finally whined hard enough to the championship committee and got what he wanted, but it will be a case of regretting what you wish for when the champ is done. Bockwinkel said he beat Tommy once and he'll do it again with the world title on the line. Rich came over and said everyone saw that Wildfire had the champ pinned if Bobby Heenan hadn't interferred. Things heated up and nearly came to blows, but Bobby pulled the champ away and said he doesn't work for free, finishing by saying "see you on New Year's, punk".

Fun Fact - I read in Katie Bar the Door yesterday that Ron Bass was known as Samuel Oliver Bass in Portland. Almost a Russo-esque gimmick. There was also a Kay Fabian in the results.

AWA ALL STAR WRESTLINGLarry Nelson did the show open from the studio and ran down the matches scheduled for the show, including a big main event when Larry Zbyszko faces The Trooper. Then an in studio interview with Scott and Bill Irwin, the Long Riders. Larry said they are FINALLY getting their long awaited match with the OTHER Long Riders Ron Bass and Black Bart at the New Year's Pro Wrestling USA supershow. Bill said they've run long enough but the time has come to settle it. Scott said first they prove there's only one team of Long Riders in pro wrestling and then it's back to business by beating the Texas Hangmen for the AWA tag team championship. Baron Von Raschke defeated Steve Mr Electricity Regal.Regal gave the Baron all he could handle, even escaping the CLAW at one point. In the end Baron jarred Regal with a back suplex for the pin. Adrian Adonis made his return to the AWA with an easy win over Nacho Barrerra.Nacho tried a single leg takedown at the bell, was stopped and rocked with a big knee to the head. Adrian used a DDT to set up GOODNIGHT IRENE for the quick win. At ringside Adrian told Ken Resnick he's back in the AWA because he hears the slow old powers that be here are finally going to fill the vacant AWA Americas title Nick Bockwinkel vacated way back when he won the world title. He said there's no better representative of America than Adrian Adonis. In studio, Larry Nelson talked with Doctor X about his upcoming match with Bruiser Brody at the New Year's supershow. The Doctor said he intends to beat Brody in the final test of his skills and then step up and challenge either Nick Bockwinkel or Tommy Rich, whoever comes out as NWA world champion. Billy Red Lyons defeated Doug Somers via pinfall.Lyons picked apart Somers early, but Doug got his comeback. It didn't last, as Lyons took him back down and pinned him in about four minutes. Boris Z and Alexis Smirnoff won by disqualification over Tony Atlas and Jim Brunzell.Hard fought, very good tag team grudge match. The action went to the floor, where all four men got involved in a brawl. Smirnoff grabbed the timekeepers bell and was going to hit Brunzell, but Atlas blocked, took it from him, and hit Smirnoff. Unfortunately the referee did not care who introduced the weapon, just who used it, and Atlas and Brunzell were disqulified. Larry Zbyszko beat The Trooper thanks to Mr Saito.Trooper looked to finish early with a standing dropkick for a near fall, but Larry stalled his way back into the match. When things heated up Trooper locked in the BIG PINCH but Saito was there to break it up. Larry got back into the match and hit his PILEDRIVER, but Trooper barely kicked out of the sloppy cover. Larry kept it going and, after throwing Trooper out of the ring, removed the turnbuckle pad in the opposite corner as the referee laid the count on Trooper. Trooper rolled back in but was run into the exposed buckle and soon fell to the pin. A bloody and defeated Trooper spoke to Ken ringside after the match. He said EVERY TIME he's got Zbyszko beat, something happens. Some sort of law breaking chicanery. Trooper vowed to get Larry on even terms and when he does he'll settle it once and for all. Fans chanted "cage, cage, cage" as Trooper got back in the ring to a roaring ovation.
PRO WRESTLING USA NEW YEAR'S SUPERSHOW Main Event: World Title Match - Nick Bockwinkel vs Tommy Rich - Doctor X vs. Bruiser Brody NO disqualification match - Long Riders (Scott and Bill Irwin) vs Long Riders (Ron Bass and Black Bart) Southern Tag Team Title Match - Rock N Roll Express vs Ravishing Desire (Randy Rose and Tom Prichard) - Sgt Slaughter vs Big John Studd - Bob Backlund vs Kharis The Mummy - Jimmy Valiant and Sill E Donkey vs Manny Fernandez and JJ Dillon

Do you have Cornette with Ravishing Desire (aka The Leftover Express)? .... Nope, Cornette and the Express proper are still somewhere in my fictional territory system waiting for their comeback whenever I decide to use them again. Good idea though. I do think these guys would benefit from someone at ringside, but I'm thinking a valet since Jimmy Hart has it locked down as the main heel manager in the territory.

PRO WRESTLING USANew Year's SupershowRock N Roll Express defeated Ravishing Desire to defend the Southern Tag Team Championship.A nice fast paced match to open the show. Ricky and Robery solidified their spot as one of the top tag teams in the world with a clean win over the team they beat in the finals of the Southern tag team title tournament. The end came after a double dropkick on Rose for the pin. Bob Backlund (w/Arnold Skaaland) beat Kharis The Mummy (w/James Mitchell).Skaaland's training seems to be paying off as Backlund had little trouble dispatching the Mummy despite James Mitchell's attempts at interference. Following the match Hugh Morrus ran out and attacked Backlund. Skaaland got involved and evened the sides until Eric The Red made his debut by running out and attacking Backlund and Skaaland with viking helmet. Things were looking bad for Backlund and Skaaland until Magnum TA ran out with a steel chair in hand to chase away Mitchell's minions. Manny Fernandez and JJ Dillon beat Jimmy Valiant and Sill E Donkey.Things broke down quick in this one. Manny and Jimmy were brawling on the arena floor while Dillon and the Donkey were in the ring. Dillon got the better of Donkey and slapped on the figure four. Donkey quickly gave up before Valiant even knew what was happening. After the bell, Dillon released the hold and Donkey got up seemingly unhurt. Dillon reached into his trunks and handed Donkey an envelope. Donkey appeared to be counting cash as Manny and Dillon walked away laughing. Jimmy Valiant was once again beside himself as Donkey tried to explain. Jimmy was having none of it and hit Donkey with a big elbow and followed with his BOOGIE WOOGIE ELBOW. He then grabbed the envelope full of cash and threw it out to the fans as Donkey ran away with his tail between his legs (literally). Big John Studd (w/Rock Riddle) defeated Sgt Slaughter.Mild upset here as Sarge had things going his way most of the bout. Studd was just too big to keep down. In the end Sarge rushed Studd in the corner, but met a big boot that put him down. Big John followed up with a big elbow drop for the pin. Scott and Bill Irwin defeated Black Bart and Ron Bass in a no disqualification match to earn the right to be called The Long Riders.Action from bell to bell and all over the ring and ringside area. In the end Bill Irwin got the advantage on Bass and hit his FLOAT KICK for the pin. In a special in ring interview, Bill Apter introduced Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle. Bill said everyone is excited to see such a decorated athlete in attendance tonight and he hears Kurt has an announcement to make. Angle said he's done everything possible in the amatuer ranks and now he has his sights set on climbing to the top of the pros. He will be entering the ring for the NWA this new year and hopes to make it to the top and honor the National Wrestling Alliance as a proud champion. Bruiser Brody defeated Doctor X in a classic.Doctor X had the best of Brody in the opening minutes, using his agility and technical prowess to keep the big man off his feet. Brody powered back into the match and things went back and forth until Brody was able to hit a twisting vertical suplex and follow up with the JUMPING KNEE DROP for the pin. Brody grabbed the mic at ringside and said everyone wants to be a big shot, but it doesn't matter if it's an Olympic gold medalist or the greatest pro wrestlers in the world, the road to the top goes through Bruiser Brody. He finished by saying he doesn't like to get tied down, but the money that comes with being world champion is hard to ignore and whoever wins in the world title match tonight may not have the belt for long. Nick Bockwinkel (w/Bobby Heenan) defeated US champion Tommy Rich to defend the World Heavyweight title.Unlike their previous encounter, Rich just did not have the answer for Bockwinkel's offense. Rich had his monents, but the champion put him away clean in the middle of the ring with the FIGURE FOUR in about ten minutes. Post Show Notes: - Sgt Slaughter had the match in hand, but rolled the dreaded snake eyes on the fateful pin. - Bart and Bass are probably working their way out of my rotation for now as I'll bring in some of the new official cards. - I was really hoping for the Doctor X win here, but Brody does what Brody does once again. - Bockwinkel has now had the world title more than one calendar year, winning December 27, 2021 (even though I've had some stretches of not playing in that time). He has successfully defended against Mad Dog Vachon, Jack Brisco, Jim Londos, Bob Backlund, Bill Dundee, Stan Hansen, Antonio Inoki, and Tommy Rich.
