bookerbill, thanks for your comments and following along! It's been a lot of fun sharing results lately and things are heating up in the Central States territory!
Wrestling at the Chase
03.06.2021 from Chase Park Plaza Hotel, St. Louis, MO- Non-Wrestling Segment -Gordon Solie and Roddy Piper welcome us to the show. Piper is none too happy about his DQ loss to Bockwinkel... Solie says we'll get to that later, but first, we have a New NWA Central States Heavyweight Champion! Bobo Brazil joins the men at the desk to a great reaction from the assembled fans at the Chase.
Brazil thanks the crowd for always having his back. He says it's been a long road to a title shot, and to share the ring with guys like Jack Brisco was an honor, and it's little doubt that beating Harley Race means something. He promises to be a fighting champ...
Before he can continue, Race and Rogers interrupt. Race tells Brazil there's only one man tough enough to carry that title, and it ain't Brazil. Rogers tells Bobo they have unfinished business too, and he'll see to it that his title reign is short-lived. Things start to break down, but before they get too out of hand, Giant Baba comes out to even the odds! A tag team match is signed for the main event!
Johnny Saint vs.
Mike Graham This match ended in a draw (TIME LIMIT EXPIRED) at 15:00
Match Rating: 4.50
Match Notes: 1 fall, 15-minute time limit in the NWA Central States Middleweight Division.
After Saint's successful debut against Tiger Conway Sr., the UK-native made it clear that he wants to make a run at Danny Hodge's middleweight title. Mike Graham wouldn't be an easy opponent to get past, though.
This was a fantastic match. They went hold for hold and move for move until the time limit finally ran out. Just incredible stuff. Graham survived the THREE IN ONE and the RUSS ABBOT while Saint escaped a sleeper attempt and a FIGURE FOUR. As you would expect there was plenty of chain wrestling and they took it the mat multiple times before an explosive move would change the tide.
Almost immediately after the bout, Gordon Solie announced that a rematch had been signed for Monday night - this time with a 30-minute time limit!
[Saint - 2 tokens, Graham - 4 tokens; promoter's note - this was one of my favorite matches I've run in a while. Everything about it felt very real and natural and all the back and forth was thrilling. When it hit the time limit, I was glad we didn't have a winner just so I could run it again.]
- Non-Wrestling Segment -Before the next match, The Fabulous Moolah joins the announce desk team. She tells Solie and Piper that she deserves another shot at Burke and she's sick of having to get in line - even for her sometimes partner Leilani Kai. At this point, though, she doesn't care who she beats - Burke, Banner, Kai - it's all the same to her.
Lelani Kai vs.
Penny BannerLelani Kai defeated Penny Banner with a RUNNING SPLASH at 1:34
Match Rating: 0.10
Match Notes: 1 fall, 15-minute time limit in the NWA Central States Women's Division.
Kai has returned from injury at the hands of Burke only to suffer defeat in tag action. Banner returned from injury at the hands of Kai only to have her title challenge spoiled by Moolah and Kai. Both women have revenge on their mind and with Banner's title rematch set for Monday, this match could have interesting implications.
Kai attacked before the bell and creamed Banner with a clothesline! She continued her devious assault and then hit her patented RUNNING SPLASH to score the early upset win!
Kai was clearly looking to continue the fight but Burke made the save and drove off the former champ. Burke helped Banner up but was pushed away in spite of her efforts...
At the announce desk, Moolah seemed pleased as punch.
[Banner - 1 token]
- Non-Wrestling Segment -Gordon Solie is ringside with Bob Backlund in his street clothes. Backlund is asked about his defeat against Harley Race in the tournament - his first loss in the Central States. Backlund says he's not discouraged or dejected and he wants all the kids out there to take note - a defeat is no reason to run away or bury your head, it's simply all the more reason to train harder and give it everything you've got to come back even better than before and that's just what he's going to do!
- Non-Wrestling Segment -Gorgeous George enters to much pomp and displeasure from the crowd. Solie comments he's not schedule for a match and makes his way to the ring for a brief interview.
George tells everyone that Danny Hodge is a ruffian and unfit to be champion any longer. He's take the champ to the limit not once but twice and the only way Hodge got out of the match the first time was getting himself DQ'd. George says he's above such notions usually, but as the uncrown champion, he is challenging Hodge to a match with no rules and no time limit!
The Spoiler vs.
Don Curtis Don Curtis defeated The Spoiler with a SLEEPER at 12:16
Match Rating: 4.00
Match Notes: 1 fall, 15-minute time limit, for the NWA DuMont Network Television Title.
The Spoiler unseated Bob Armstrong as the TV champ last week but has decided to continue the open challenge concept. Armstrong was able to string together some successful defenses in Chicago at the Marigold before bringing the strap to the Central States and racking up a few more. Will the Spoiler have the same success?
Buffalo native Don Curtis is the first to answer the challenge.
It was one hell of a match. Spoiler took the fight to the challenger, cutting off multiple comeback attempts to establish dominance. He took the low road and earned the crowd's ire by choking Curtis with his singlet strap multiple times. Curtis, fed up, took things outside and brawled with the Spoiler to finally secure an advantage.
Spoiler wasn't out of it yet, thought. The action see-sawed in furious style until Curtis reversed an armbar attempt and after a massive collision out of the corner applied his SLEEPER to get the win!
We've got a new champ!
[Curtis - 2 tokens, Spoiler - 1 token]
Don Curtis won the NWA DuMont Network Television Title- Non-Wrestling Segment -Bobby Heenan and Nick Bockwinkel, flanked by Buddy Rose and Doug Somers make their way out to gloat over Bockwinkel's DQ win over Piper last Monday. Piper is red-faced, steaming, mad, but very clearly outnumbered.
Heenan says the odds are always stacked against his guys! Matysik suspended Superstar, Stevens, and Mulligan! Matysik wouldn't grant Bockwinkel against hat newly crowned loser, Bob Armstrong! Matysik lets guys like Piper throw chairs at innocent managers like himself! Maybe if this is the Wild West, they ought to take things into their own hands... Adonis on the shelf, Bob Orton is nowhere to be found... Piper's all alone out here...
Solie tries to make an appeal, but Piper is ready to fight, odds be damned...
He holds his own, but the odds are too great... Until Bob Armstrong makes his way out brandishing a chair!
A big 6-man is signed for Monday night!
Bobo Brazil and
Giant Baba vs.
Harley Race and
Buddy RogersBobo Brazil defeated Buddy Rogers with a COCO BUTT at 10:05
Match Rating: 2.75
Match Notes: 1 fall, 30-minute time limit, this is your main event of the evening!
Bobo Brazil is your New NWA Central States Heavyweight Champion after besting Harley Race in the finals of a one-night tournament to fill the spot vacated by Johnny Valentine after he captured the Worlds Heavyweight Championship.
Not only was Race looking for some revenge, but Rogers has a beef with Brazil going back to before Brazil sent Rogers' enforcer, Killer Kowalski packing in a loser leaves town match. Add in the newcomer, Rikidozan's protege, Giant Baba, who took Rogers to the limit in a time limit draw in the aforementioned tournament and you have an explosive combo.
The fans were firmly behind Bobo and Baba but Race and Rogers had their share of offense in a back and forth contest that saw plenty of good tag action.
A rare miscue by Rogers led to a big COCO BUTT from Brazil to secure the win. But the action didn't stop there as Race immediately pounced on Bobo and threw him out of the ring! He grabbed a chair but Baba was able to make the save... Until a masked man ran out and attacked Baba from behind! The mask fooled no one and even Solie remarked - "Now wait a minute... That is clearly Killer Kowalski in a mask!"
The post-match beatdown continued until Bob Backlund ran out and leveled the playing field! The crowd was at fever pitch as the show came to a close.
