It sounds like the Oakland As might be moving to Salt Lake Cty for 3 years until their new stadium in Las Vegas is built and opens in 2028.
The lease for the As expires after 2024 and a renewal is currently seen as unlikely with the situation there very toxic. Salt Lake City is currently building a new ballpark for their AAA team that will open in 2025 and the city has already hosted and held talks with As ownership about temporarily hosting the team for 3 years. Other possible home sites for the As from 2025-2027 reportedly include the Giants stadium (when San Francisco is out of town obviously but I think that is logistically very difficult to schedule,) the AAA stadium in Sacramento, the AAA Las Vegas Ballpark in Las Vegas, and possibly even staying in Oakland for 3 lame duck seasons.
My first question, if Las Vegas is helping to pay for the $1.5 billion it costs to build this new ballpark for the As, why aren't the As playing in Las Vegas at the new Las Vegas Ballpark (annuallly voted the best in AAA and where As merch is already being highlighted and sold?)
My second question, if the As move to Salt Lake City for 3 years then what the Hell do you call the team? You definitley can not call them the Oakland As at that point and they would not have yet made their final move to Las Vegas, so I'm guessing the Salt Lake City As?

It is possible that SLC reached out to the As before Las Vegas has. The As might even be using SLC to get a better deal from Vegas. As far as the team's name I could see them being the Las Vegas As playing in SLC. There was talk of the Tampa Rays playing half their season in Montreal a year or two ago and I know they would not change their name. Granted the As are looking at a full season and three of them to boot but it might be the easy thing to do to go by Las Vegas. Then again since teams are all about business and making money especially from merchandising, they might go by SLC for three years before switching again with the move to Vegas. Of course, it all might end up moot if they end up playing in or around Vegas for the next three years.

In addition, the As will also be playing two Spring Training games against the Brewers here in Las Vegas this March.

Not much different than playing out of the country like other sports due now and then. Only this will be to start building the local fan base. Speaking of Vegas, I see your Knights are rolling into Motown tomorrow to take on my Wings. Lucky for you, Kane will probably still be out of action and miss the game. Should be a good one regardless.

I read an article the other day that the A's may have no choice but to play in Sacramento for the next three years or they forfeit the TV rights deal they have that pays them $70 million a year. The team currently says they love $40 million a year playing in Oakland, so I can't see them giving that up and then moving to losing $110 million a year for the next three years.
At this point it might be better for the A's to suspend operations after next year until the Vegas Stadium is built.

I doubt MLB would allow them to cease playing for a season. They will work something out.

I doubt MLB would allow them to cease playing for a season. They will work something out. I think the players union would also not allow it as I imagine a team just freezing operations for 3 years would have to violate the collective bargaining agreement.

With regards to the first question, there may be a matter of the A's not owning the Aviators. With the A's moving into the market, they may decided not to continue the affiliation with the Triple A team and the Hughes corporation might not be interested in speeding up their likely forced relocation. I think SLC's motive is not unlike when OKC hosted the New Orleans Hornets after Katrina. Prove themselves as a host city and move to the front of the line for future expansion and relocation discussions. As for what to call them, I think you drop the geographic portion of the name and just call them The Athletics. . . Almost like a traveling team. Maybe get a sponsor on there and for three seasons be the SkyWest Airlines Athletics like a team in the Japan or South Korean leagues.

The second one is good, but it would open Pandora's box that I do not think the MLB would want right now. You could see other teams trying to get sponsorship to make more money. The geographic portion has been mostly cities but has also been states so why not regions. Maybe the West Coast A's or the Western States A's?

oh yeah, I understand Salt Lake City's motivation to be a temporary 3-year home for the As
my guess for the name would be the Salt Lake City As as from what I recall the New Orleans Hornets became the Oklahoma City Hornets when they temporarily went to Oklahoma City after Hurricane Katrina (but then again didn't the Saints play in San Antontio after Hurricane Katrina and yet were still called the New Orleans Saints?)
