On Grant’s board, Chad made a suggestion to voice concerns to Tom and company, so I thought why not make this thread. Now lets get something out of the way. I love this game and It’s a hobby that’s lasted from 1989 until today. I promote the hell out of it in hopes of getting it to grow, but like people, no company is perfect, but if people express their issues and/or concerns, it can prove to be helpful because it may not even be known by those in charge.
So lets start:
1) Secrecy. I wish this game had a million fans, but it doesn’t. It’s a niche game and that’s ok. It makes it a close community as many of us are personal friends, talk outside of the COTG bubble, but the secrecy is confusing.
I’m not talking about who is the next big Legends signing or which Gladiator will get a Cleansing in the next edition, but with what happened at the end of last year in Promoter Prime. If that was explained beforehand, I guarantee all players would’ve been okay with the situation. All that was needed to be said at the beginning, instead of weeks of speculation and frustration, “Hey promoters. The Q3 GWF offering didn’t turn out like we hoped, so we’re just going to delay and release it with the Q4 offering. We apologize for the delay, but we want to make sure the best product available is out there.”
And make sure these, or any, announcements aren’t buried within an ongoing thread. Make sure it’s posted on the main site, facebook, twitter…even pin those announcements at the top of the discussion boards. Make sure that stuff is posted anywhere eyes will see it.
2) The charts online. I love the game, but with my schedule, if it was still cards/dice, my playing would be hampered. With online though, I am lucky enough to play anywhere. I can bring my laptop to Chick Fil A, play some matches while taking notes for Cornette’s podcast.
I still can’t figure out why the charts aren’t correct though. Is it a time-consuming thing? I really don’t know how it works with the online component, but it’s kinda frustrating knowing they aren’t correct.
3) Con cards. That’s fine if people don’t agree with this, but for the life of me, especially since this is small/niche community, why people want things to be “exclusive”. If we want this game to grow, you can’t discourage new fans. It’s not their fault that they started playing the game later than us, so why discourage them?
I hear people say “Oh, people don’t need a Nacho Barrera or Frogman LeBlanc cards. They aren’t essential to the game!” I mean, neither is good guy Larry Zbyszko or referee cards, but they’re available. And who is anyone on this board to say con cards aren’t needed by someone. Why say that? Lol.
I’ve offered a solution to this before. We get a pretty good deal with three cards for online and in printed form for $15. That’s a pretty good deal at $2.50 a piece (and I won’t ever use the indy cards, but I get it’s part of the package)
Make individual cards available one year after their con release for a steeper price. You could charge $10 for the online or $10 for printed version for $20 for both.
And if people still want to have an exclusive card, give it a different background or something for the con exclusive, but it’s silly to exclude fans who happened to come to this game later than some, especially a game community that isn’t huge in the first place. That’s not how you grow fans. I know if I saw a game I liked and there was stuff I couldn’t get, I’d probably be eh, that’s ok.
And give folks cards they can actually use. Lets be honest: the arena cards are cool for bootlegs, but really…how many people use those? And I guarantee no one will use that blue/black and white Omega card because they just got the card in color a few weeks ago. If I was a GWF fan, I’d been bummed. Give the fans an undercard guy they can use for Early Classics. The whole point of this upcoming set is to fill in the gaps with women. Those kind of slots in con or prime spots could be used for the same thing.
That’s my issues. It may sound gripey, but that’s ok. If I didn’t love the game, I wouldn’t have concerns about it.
