Card 03 – (ULC 02 – Rogers v. Savage) Little Caesars Arena, Detroit, Michigan
Lou Albano & Bruiser Costa dominated Chaz Taylor & Tugboat Taylor. Despite significant support from the fans at ringside the Taylor family just could not get their offense rolling tonight. Albano nearly ended it early with a SICILIAN SLAM but a pin save by Tugboat Taylor kept his son alive. Each time the Taylors had an opportunity to turn the momentum, it was quickly cut off by their opponents. Even a drastic misstep in double teaming by Albano & Costa did not turn the match. Chaz returned the pin save favour late in the match when Albano hit a SICILIAN SLAM on Tugboat Taylor but he could not save his father from THE CLAW from Costa seconds later. * ½
King Kong Bundy crushed Ron Hutchinson. Bundy got into it with Morgan Dollar before the bell and Dollar actually looks scared. The fans were hoping that lightning would strike twice and Hutchinson did have his moments where he was able to frustrate his much larger foe but the results were not as successful as their previous encounter. Bundy was able to power through Hutchinson’s offense for the most part and used a bear hug to slow things down before finishing Hutchinson with an ATLANTIC CITY AVALANCE for the five count. *
Iron Sheik w/Shawn Daivari defeated Larry Hennig by submission. Sheik got the mic and gave the fans his view on American in general and Larry Henning in particular which was met with epic heat. Hennig used his power to knock the Sheik around early but when the action went outside Hennig found himself in trouble especially trying to focus on Daivari at the same time as his opponent. Back in the ring, Sheik loaded his boot and nails a deathjump stomp to the lower back with it which set up a CAMEL CUTCH for the win. *
Bobo Brazil defeated Rob Van Dam by disqualification. There is a real main event feel prior to the bell with both competitors hailing from Michigan. The antics of Van Dam get appear to get under the skin of Morgan Dollar prior to the bell. Van Dam in on fire early on with his speed and agility. A standing moonsault connects as does a split legged moonsault before Van Dam takes the action outside. The trade blows and Dollar decides suddenly that he has seen enough from Van Dam and calls for the disqualification. The fans hate the decision as it is clear Dollar was not impressed with Mr. Pay Per View tonight. D
Ted DiBiase bested Hacksaw Jim Duggan by submission. This was back and forth war before it was all said and done. Duggan was busted open early and lost a significant amount of blood while DiBiase battered him with everything he had. Duggan found away to avoiding being pinned and also avoided DiBiase’s finisher as well before mounting a huge comeback and busting DiBiase open. With the fans roaring, Duggan connected with a FLYING SPEAR but DiBiase got his shoulder up at the last possible second bringing ringside to their feet in disbelief. DiBiase was able to counter attack and trapped Duggan in a surprize scorpion deathlock in the middle of the ring for the victory. ***
In a Lumberjack Match, Gorgeous George w/Cherie Dupré beat “Cowboy” Scott Casey. On Casey’s side, Brutus Beefcake, Marty Jannetty, Scott Taylor, Tugboat Taylor and Chaz Taylor are at ringside. For George, “Pretty Boy” Bobby Heenan, Rock Riddle, Lenny Lane, Lou Albano & Bruiser Costa take up positions on the floor. Despite the tension on the floor, George wrestles an incredibly smart match never letting the action leave the ring and instead focusing on destroying his foe which he did from bell to bell. Casey had zero offense the entire match and fell to a SPINNING TOE HOLD. D
World Tag Team Champions Road Warriors defeated Jimmy Snuka & Bruiser Brody. Road Warrior Animal was cut off early on and took a beating from the challengers. Brody could not put Animal away with a JUMPING KNEE SMASH and Animal just barely kicked out after a deathjump cross body from the Superfly. The action went to floor where Animal was able to battering ram Snuka into the ring post in a sick looking spot that left Snuka bleeding profusely. Hawk entered and crushed Snuka with a gut wrench suplex for a two count before the Warriors hit the DOOMSDAY DEVICE. Brody’s pin save was blocked and the champions retained in violent fashion. *** ½
“Macho Man” Randy Savage defeated World Champion Buddy Rogers by count-out. Rogers get into the face of Morgan Dollar before the bell drawing great heat. Savage is like a man possessed from the opening bell and goes on the high-speed offensive. FLYING ELBOW DROP lands but cannot get the three-count. Savage continues to assault the champion with a piledriver for a near fall and Rogers somehow finds a way to kick out after a second FLYING ELBOW DROP which brings ringside to their feet. The action goes outside where Savage nails a flying axehandle. Rogers gets tossed back into side and a running knee to back sends Rogers to the floor. Rogers grabs his title belt and leaves ringside to epic heat. Dollar counts out Rogers and Savage leaves Detroit with the win, but not the title. **
