YOUR MID-WEEK UPDATE FOR PRO WRESTLING INDEPENDENT SPIRIT

ITEM: The home stretch heading into Spirit of Independence runs through Berwyn this weekend. Our fantastic main event features Rob Van Dam taking on Bryan Danielson. Also in action: The Young Bucks, Tyler Black and a potential tournament-qualifying match between Mike Quackenbush and Shane Hollister. If Hollister wins he's in. Quackenbush is in regardless.

ITEM:
Drake Younger and Eddie Kingston shocked Commissioner Charlie Cox last week in Burlington when they presented him with PWIS contracts. These contracts were approved above Cox's head by the Competition Committee. There is apparently nothing Cox can do about it, meaning Younger and Kingston are guaranteed appearances despite Younger's recent ban by Cox. We caught up with Cox and asked him for his take on the situation: "I really don't know what to say. Drake Younger has proven to be a negligently dangerous man in the ring and it is my belief that he's going to get someone seriously injured with his 'deathmatch' tactics. But apparently my concerns don't carry much weight with the higher-ups. Every time I answer the phone I'm half expecting I'll be told to let Pearce and Doane off the hook as well. Frankly, I'm a little peeved."

ITEM: On July 4th, from Philadelphia PA, PWIS will host it's first annual Spirit of Independence Tournament. 16 stars from PWIS and other promotions will compete to see who is the best in independent wrestling! The winner of this inaugural tournament will also be crowned the first PWIS Champion!

Our Guest of Honor will be Japanese star, Jushin 'Thunder' Liger. He will join the top ten ranked stars in PWIS. Austin Aries will also participate, as well as four names to be determined by the fans.

We begin the show with a camera catching a meeting between Commissioner Charlie Cox, Mike Quackenbush, and Delirious. There is a heated discussion going on. Cox is fired up and Quackenbush looks bewildered and on the defensive. Delirious just sits there, stone-faced and more sober than usual. Cox gesticulates, Quackenbush shakes his head, Delirious just follows each of them with intense eyes. Cox throws his hands in the air and turns towards the camera and walks out of the room. "I'm going to get to the bottom of this! Wait and see!" he yells over his shoulder. The other two men just look at each other, speechless. As the camera pulls back and the angle changes, we can see Adam Pearce sitting in the opposite corner, chin resting on his fists.

INTRO

LOUDEN NOXIOUS: "Liiiive!! From Berwyn, Illinois. It's Pro Wrestling Independent Spirit!"

(Louden Noxious and Adam Pearce are calling the action)

MATCH #1

Arik Cannon vs. Eddie Kingston

LOUDEN: "We start the night with two matches that are mandatory appearances for Eddie Kingston and Drake Younger. This might get ugly quick!"
ADAM: "Don't be such a Nancy. So these guys like to fight... it's wrestling! What's the big deal?"
Cannon hits a couple of early brainbusters and Kingston is in trouble. Kingston takes the fight outside of the ring and begins a beat down of Cannon who is soon bloodied against the ring post. Cannon, however, refuses to be pinned and comes back strong with a couple of pin attempts of his own. The fight goes outside again and this time Kingston crotches Cannon on the rail and gets disqualified for a wicked chair shot that drops Cannon into the front row. Kingston raises his two middle fingers as he leaves.
LOUDEN: "Kingston has turned up the violence already."
ADAM: "Hey. He's a passionate fighter. You have to respect that."

Winner: Arik Cannon

MATCH #2

Drake Younger vs. Gran Akuma

LOUDEN: "Akuma is world-renowned as a striker!"
ADAM: "I think Younger likes being hit."
Akuma hurts Younger at a couple of points with a series of kicks but Drake is a step ahead of him for most of the match, smacking him around inside the ring and out. Drake's Landing ends Akuma's night. Younger pats his fallen opponent on the chest before leaving without ceremony.

Winner: Drake Younger

MATCH #3

Mike Quackenbush vs. Shane Hollister

LOUDEN: "There's a lot on the line for Hollister tonight. If he wins he will be in the Spirit of Independence tournament."
ADAM: "Whatever."
Quackenbush has Hollister in trouble from the opening bell. With a lot of heart, Hollister turns it around and unleashes an impressive string of offensive moves against Quack. Even though he survives a couple of Buzzsaw Kicks, they leave Quackenbush open for a springboard DDT that gives Hollister the win-and-in. Hollister is excited but does not forget to shake Quack's hand with respect.

Winner: Shane Hollister

Intermission: A video montage is presented of clips from past PWIS shows featuring all of the top stars in action. At the end of the video we see:

MATCH #4

Ricky Landell vs. Tyler Black

ADAM: "It's always a pleasure to see a young man with Landell's talent in the ring."
Landell has a good start whipping Black around the ring and hitting him with dropkicks. Black kicks out after a hiptoss neckbreaker, after which Landell mounts the turnbuckle and jumps. Black catches him in mid-air and spins him around into a Paroxysm and covers him for a three count. Landell kneels in the ring for a moment, dejected. He rolls under the bottom rope and heads to the back.
LOUDEN: "Landell may have lost some momentum heading into Spirit of Independence."
ADAM: "Zip it, hippy!"

Winner: Tyler Black

MATCH #5

The Young Bucks vs. The New Backseat Boyz

This wild match sees the Bucks precision teamwork pitted against the Boyz' dirty tactics. Eventually the match turns into a big brawl outside of the ring. The ref has lost control and throws the match out.

Double Disqualification

MAIN EVENT

Rob Van Dam vs. Bryan Danielson

The fans are pumped for this match. The men stare each other down, forehead to forehead. They move in a circle this way until RVD makes a move that Danielson evades. Then it's on as there is a double-down after they both try a clothesline. Danielson recovers first and puts Van Dam in a Guillotine Choke. RVD gets a rope break. Danielson goes to the top rope but RVD tosses him to the mat and tries a finisher himself. Danielson kicks out after the Five-Star Frog Splash. Some more action and another kick out after a Five-Star. RVD controls the match for the duration but he pushes his luck and gets disqualified for executing a Van Terminator. The fans don't care, as they are all on there feet cheering. RVD shakes his head disappointed, then shrugs and heads to the back. A wobbly Danielson shoves the ref away when he tries to assist him.

Winner: Bryan Danielson

AFTERMATH

Backstage

Adam Pearce is standing over a sullen Ricky Landell, appearing to be giving him advice. When he sees the cameraman approach, he shuts the door in his face.

Elsewhere, we see Commissioner Cox handing Younger and Kingston their payouts.
DRAKE: "Thanks, Charlie-boy. (to Kingston) Big show on the 4th. We gonna be there?"
EDDIE: "Damn straight."
Cox glares after them as they leave.

INTRO

LOUDEN NOXIOUS: "Wreesstling fans!!! Welcome to Pro Wrestling Independent Spirtit and the Spirit of Independence Tournament!! We will be crowning the first PWIS champion and you are here to witness it! The Naptown Dragons will also be defending their titles later today plus some other surprises. Right now let's start the opening round!!"

(Louden Noxious and Leonard F. Chikarason are calling the action)

OPENING ROUND

MATCH #1

Claudio Castagnoli(1) vs. Kevin Steen(16)

LOUDEN: "We open tonight with the number one seed, Castagnoli."
LEONARD: "And Steen is a former ROH World Champion. This should be a great match."
Castagnoli controlled this match from the start, frustrating any attempts at offense by Steen. Claudio got the pinfall after a springboard European Uppercut.

Winner: Claudio Castagnoli

MATCH #2

Shane Hollister(9) vs. Necro Butcher(8)

LOUDEN: "Hollister was entered into this tournament after a last minute victory over one of the top seeds, Mike Quackenbush!"
Most of this match took place outside of the ring as Necro started the fun by giving Hollister a running bulldog onto a chair. Hollister fought back, though, getting a string of pin attempts. Necro takes it outside again and DDTs Hollister on a stack of chairs. After some more punishment, Hollister can't kick out after a Tiger Driver.

Winner: Necro Butcher

MATCH #3

Colt Cabana(4) vs. Roderick Strong(13)

LOUDEN: "Strong is the current ROH World Champion and the top vote-getter in our fan poll."
Strong gets an early near fall with a Gibson Driver. Colt takes over right after and is looking good until Strong hits him with a surprise Yakuza kick and cradles Colt for the three count.
LEONARD: "Some people might call this an upset but it is anything but. Strong is dangerous opponent for anyone in this tournament." 

Winner: Roderick Strong

MATCH #4

Ricky Landell(5) vs. Austin Aries(12)

LEONARD: "This could be one of the most interesting match-ups of the first round."
At the opening bell, Landell charges Aries and shoulder rams him into the corner. Moments later, he gets a near fall with a Fisherman's Buster. He tries it again for another near fall. And a third time. Spinning chop and another Fisherman's Buster for a near fall. A fifth Fisherman's Buster followed by a Top Rope Fist Drop and Landell gets the win.
LOUDEN: "Landell came out aggressive and beat a very formidable opponent!"
Leonard: "Could we be seeing to Adam Pearce's influence?"

Winner: Ricky Landell

MATCH #5

Jushin Liger(11) vs. Rob Van Dam(6)

The crowd is murmuring with great anticipation for this bout. Liger puts on an exhibition at RVD's expense. The ref goes down at one point after RVD dodges a a Liger deathjump. As Liger checks the ref RVD makes his move. The action goes back and forth until RVD executes a Northern Lights suplex and gets the win.

Winner: Rob Van Dam

MATCH #6

Mike Quackenbush(3) vs. Jigsaw(14)

LOUDEN: "These two are very familiar with each another, being long-time partners and rivals."
LEONARD: "Jigsaw is another popular selection from our fan poll."
Jigsaw gets the flash win after a superkick and the Jig 'N' Tonic.
LEONARD: "Another top seed has fallen to the wayside."

Winner: Jigsaw

MATCH #7

Arik Royal(10) vs. 2 Cold Scorpio(7)

LOUDEN: "Arik Royal is one of the breakout stars of PWIS to this point."
The opponents shake hands before the bout and after a feeling-out process, Royal gets the advantage. The match is all Royal who uses a couple of Kurt Cobain Sick Kicks to come out on top.

WINNER: Arik Royal

MATCH #8

Chris Hero(15) vs. Bryan Danielson(2)

After Danielson's introduction, a sleazy looking guy comes from the back. It's the former star of Survivor and would-be wrestling manager, Jonny Fairplay. He grabs the mic from Louden: "All right. Listen up! I see everyone's favorite, Dwayne, has his own reality show where he's going to make someone a 'hero'. Well, I'm the first and only reality TV star and there's only one hero in professional wrestling: That Young Knockout Kid - Chris Hero!!!"
This may have been the most hard-hitting match in PWIS history as the two superb strikers pummeled one another for nearly fifteen minutes. Danielson's kicks were pitted against Hero's elbows but it was the referee that ended this match when Danielson used a German suplex to put Hero through the announcer's table.

WINNER: Chris Hero

BREAK

LOUDEN: "Well, fans this has been an eventful opening round. We'll be taking a break but will return later this afternoon. So grab some lunch while we find a new table to sit at."

QUARTERFINALS

MATCH #1

Claudio Castagnoli(1) vs. Necro Butcher(8)

Claudio gets early control using his strength but Necro soon turns the match into a brawl where he excels. Castagnoli pulls off the win with a Ricola Bomb.

Winner: Claudio Castagnoli

MATCH #2

Ricky Landell(5) vs. Roderick Strong(13)

The bell rings and Roddy charges Landell in the corner but Landell ducks under the incoming Yakuza kick and cradles Strong for the two count. After being suplexed, Strong leaves the ring and drags Landell out, whipping him hard into the barricade. Pulling Landell back into the ring, Roderick beats him with a Gibson Driver.

Winner: Roderick Strong

MATCH #3

Jigsaw(14) vs. Rob Van Dam(6)

Before the bell, Van Dam steps up to Jigsaw pointing to himself saying 'R-V-D'. The masked conundrum is not impressed, giving Van Dam a hard slap to the chest. The match has some good back and forth but Van Dam starts to press his advantage. Jigsaw hangs in there but eventually is defeated after a Five-Star Frog Splash.

Winner: Rob Van Dam

MATCH #4

Arik Royal(10) vs. Chris Hero(15)

Fairplay once again joins Hero at ringside. Royal starts pummeling Hero right away. Hero withstands the assault and ends up hitting Royal with a Rolling Elbow Smash but Arik kicks out. A second Rolling Elbow Smash knocks Royal out. Hero advances to the semi-finals.
LOUDEN: "We are definitely seeing a more intense Chris Hero than when he was last in PWIS!"

WINNER: Chris Hero

SPECIAL ATTRACTION

Sara Del Rey vs. April Hunter

The two powerful women clash with Del Rey controlling the match. There is a loud mouth female fan in the crowd criticizing some of the spots but the competitors ignore it. Hunter makes a comeback and works Del Rey's back with The Hunter Lock until Sara taps out from the pain. As Del Rey lies on the mat favoring her back and Hunter has her hand raised, the rowdy female fan comes through the crowd and hops the barricade. She gets in the ring, wearing jeans and a tank top, and starts stomping Del Rey's back. Sara clutches at the ropes trying to get to her feet but her attacker jumps and sits down hard on the back. The assailant is screaming about how Del Rey isn't so tough. Hunter has stayed out of it to this point but pulls the attacker back by a shoulder. The woman spins around and screams at her: "Keep your hands off me, b***h!" As this is going on, Drake Younger and Eddie Kingston have surreptitiously made their way down to the ring. Kingston is holding a kendo stick. When it looks like Hunter is about to go after the other woman, Younger reaches under the ropes tripping her and drags her out of the ring. Drake takes the kendo stick and Kingston restrains Hunter. Younger tosses the kendo stick up to the woman who lays into Del Rey with it, focusing on her lower back. Younger looks into one of the cameras. "It looks like ladies can be hardcore too," he laughs. Officials rush the ring and the mystery woman bails out and heads to the back with Younger and Kingston.

WINNER: April Hunter

SEMI-FINALS

(Referee Bryce Remsberg will be officiating the rest of the tournament)

MATCH #1

Claudio Castagnoli(1) vs. Roderick Strong(13)

Strong and Castagnoli exchanged moves early. No one had a clear-cut advantage until Strong gives his opponent a powerbomb backbreaker. The weakened Castagnoli was eliminated after a Gibson Driver.

Winner: Roderick Strong

MATCH #2

Rob Van Dam(5) vs. Chris Hero(15)

Hero lands a couple of strikes right away but van Dam fires back with some kicks and Hero soon finds himself almost pinned after a Five-Star Frog Splash. The tide turns in Hero's favor and a couple of Rolling Elbow Smashes have RVD in trouble. The match leaves the ring and Hero, thinking he's clever, imitates Van Dam by throwing him a chair and blasting him with a Rolling Elbow Smash into it. Remsberg calls for the disqualification. Hero flips out and Jonny Fairplay tries threatening Bryce but ends up on rear at ringside. A bloody Van Dam is assisted to the back.
LEONARD: "Van Dam is definitely the worse for wear while his opponent in the finals, Roderick Strong, has come through the day relatively unscathed."

Winner: Rob Van Dam

PWIS TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

The Naptown Dragons vs. The Samoan Island Tribe

The Samoans give the Dragons a run for their money. The size difference made it easy for SIT to work over Scotty Vortekz. Once Dustin Lee gets into the ring it evens up a little and the Dragons put away Samu with Dragon's Breath.

WINNERS: Naptown Dragons

FINALS

Rob Van Dam vs. Roderick Strong

RVD comes to the ring slowly with his head bandaged as Strong confidently dances in his corner in a boxer's stance. Strong takes over right away with suplexes and backbreakers. Van Dam won't stay down but it looks like Roddy will walk away with this one. At one point both men came off of the ropes with a lariat. RVD recovers from the double-down first and mounts the turnbuckle, coming down with a Five-Star Frog Splash. Strong kicks out of the pin attempt but RVD does it three more times and Strong finally isn't able to kick out. RVD can barely stand to receive the new PWIS Championship belt from Commissioner Charlie Cox. When he is finally to his feet the crowd goes wild in appreciation of their new champion's performance today.

WINNER: Rob Van Dam

INTRO

The show opens with a highlight package from the Spirit of Independence Tournament where Rob Van Dam was crowned the first PWIS Champion.

MATCH #1

Claudio Castagnoli vs. Juan Francisco de Coronado

Before the match begins there is an impromptu fashion contest between Juan and Claudio as to who has the flashier ring attire. The fans are 100% behind Castagnoli.  Man Servant Herbert attempts to console Coronado.
Castagnoli is much bigger and manhandles Coronado at first. Juan puts together a string of springboard crossbodies with a couple of pin attempts. Claudio has had enough of the little man and puts him away with an Alpamare Waterslide.

Winner: Claudio Castagnoli

MATCH #2

Daizee Haze vs. April Hunter

Haze starts the match clapping and getting the crowd behind her. Hunter is all business but Daizee's fan-fueled momentum leads to some early pin attempts. Hunter shows her toughness and weathers Daizee's flurry of offense. Hunter's strength takes the match away from Haze and The Head Hunter seals the deal.

Winner: April Hunter

MATCH #3

The Naptown Dragons vs. The Heartbreak Express

Superstar Sean and Fabulous Phil come to the ring with their customary pomp and, as usual, the fans love giving them a hard time. There is collective breath of awe as the PWIS Tag Team Champions come through the curtain. The fans know they are in for a treat even though this is a non-title match.
Dustin Lee starts off with a stiff forearm to Fabulous Phil followed by a swinging DDT and a quick pin attempt. Lee throws his foe out of the ring and proceeds to smash him in the face with a willing fan's water bottle. Scotty Vortekz is tagged in and goes for a deathjump but Phil counters with a clothesline and tags in Superstar Sean. The fans jeer but fall silent when he big splashes Scotty. Sean gets in a couple of more shots but Vortekz manages to tag in Lee. HBX isolate Lee and work him over. Phil even hits 'Die Hard' with a small length of chain he has secreted in his tights. Vortekz gets back in but neither him or Lee can get any consistent offense going due to HBX's frequent tags. This leads to Lee being pinned after The Heartbreaker. The seemingly unbeatable Dragons have suffered there first PWIS loss. HBX are jubilant and will likely be demanding a title shot from Commissioner Cox.

Winner: The Heartbreak Express

Intermission: Louden introduces newly crowned PWIS Champion Rob Van Dam. RVD's head is bandaged and it's obvious he had a long, hard road to the title. He says that he is looking forward to defending this belt for all of the fans and having it a long time. Like clockwork, he is interrupted by the rodent-like Jonny Fairplay who comes through the curtain with something to say. "Hold on there, Rob Van Dam. Something you seem to be forgetting is that Chris Hero had you beat if not for the long-standing policy of this company to screw him over. As his spokesman I'm here to set everyone straight... Chris Hero is the uncrowned champion and it's only a matter of time until he claims what is rightfully his."
"Whatever, dude," is RVD's response. "If Chris Hero wants another shot at me, all he has to do is step up. Not send his stooge to do it for him."
The crowd cheers loudly for RVD and Fairplay scrutinizes the fans with disgust and retreats to the back.

MATCH #4

Chris Hero w/Jonny Fairplay vs. Blue Meanie

After intermission, Fairplay returns, this time with Chris Hero, and the fans let them have it. Hero then proceeds to dust Meanie in under a minute with a Rolling Elbow Smash.

Winner: Chris Hero

MATCH #5

Jushin Liger vs. Jigsaw

The two masked men faced off in this competitive match that saw Liger scoring the win with a Fisherman's Buster.

Winner: Jushin Liger

MAIN EVENT

Mike Quackenbush & Delirious vs. Ultramantis Black & Crossbones

There is eager anticipation as Delirious' tormentor finally steps into a PWIS ring to face his victim. As their opponents wait in the ring, the villainous masked men enter through eerie mist. Crossbones and Quackenbush start the match. The two go back and forth until a Quackendriver II makes Ultramantis break up the pin attempt. Delirious is tagged in and puts Crossbones down with Chemical Imbalance #2. Ultramantis steps in again and stuns Delirious with a Mongolian chop. Crossbones takes over and has Delirious in trouble for a while. Delirious pulls out the win, though, cradling Crossbones after a missed move coming off of the ropes. While the heroes got the victory, they were still not able to get their hands on the evil mastermind, Ultramantis Black.

Winners: Mike Quackenbush & Delirious

AFTERMATH

Backstage

The Heartbreak Express, as expected, have tracked down Commissioner Cox.
SUPERSTAR SEAN: "Commissioner! You saw how we beat those two bums out there tonight. We deserve a title shot, baby!"
COMMISSIONER: "All right, settle down a minute. You did get a win against the champs. But before I grant you a title match I want to see what other contenders make a showing in the next month. The tag team division is growing and I'm not going to have one or two teams monopolizing title matches."
SUPERSTAR SEAN: "Those belts are coming home eventually, Cox! You can't deny it! It's out destiny, daddy!"
FABULOUS PHIL: "Destiny."

Dressing room

Delirious is pacing the room. Mike Quackenbush is trying to ease his anxious partner.
MIKE: "I know. We didn't get to Ultramantis Black tonight. But that just goes to show he doesn't want to be in there with us."
DELIRIOUS: "dah-bah adah-bah... DAAA!!!"
MIKE: "Be patient, my friend. It's only a matter of time until we have him cornered."
