Wrestling Championship Association presented by The Guilty Party
Card 1.1
Jan 4th, Texas Hall, Arlington Texas
The start of a new year saw the start of a new tradition of excellence in professional wrestling with the inaugural event for the Wrestling Championship Association. Texas Hall, on the campus of the University of Texas in Arlington was packed with fans eager to see the crowning of the Association’s first ever tag team champions. The rowdy Texans got to see some fantastic action, a big dose of controversy, and the debut of a powerful force named Andre the Giant.
WCA Tag Team Championship Tournament round 1 match
The Mega-Bucks (with Virgil) defeated Brad Armstrong & The Mountie via disqualification.
The biggest story going into this tournament was the acquisition by the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase of the services of Andre the Giant as his tag team partner. DiBiase, in announcing the team as participants in the title tournament, had described the French colossus as a prize thoroughbred that he would ride all the way to championship gold! While DiBiase may have been expecting an easy ride to the titles, some one forgot to tell Brad Armstrong and The Mountie! Andre dominated Brad Armstrong from the beginning, repeatedly squashing the smaller man in the corner, but Armstrong was able to escape and make a desperate tag to his partner. The Mountie came in and went right after the big man, rocking him with repeated jaw jacking shots, high risk and high impact moves and even hit his short arm chokeslam not once, but twice! The Mountie might have shocked the world and beaten Andre, if not for the interference of Virgil at ringside and the painfully slow counts of referee Bill Alfonso. The Mountie went for a third short arm chokeslam, but Alfonso inexplicably attempted to get between The Mountie and Andre. Alfonso was sandwiched between the two wrestlers, and knocked out of the action. As replacement referee Toby Jones, ran down to the ring, a frustrated Mountie grabbed his shock stick and put twenty thousand volts into The Giant! Andre went down like chopped down redwood, and the Mountie made the cover while Armstrong cut off DiBiase, but as soon as he hit the ring, referee Jones called for the bell, having witnessed the Mountie use the cattle prod, had no choice but to award the match to the Mega-Bucks. The Mega-Bucks fled quickly from the irate and shock stick wielding Canadian. As the victorious duo made their way to the back, DiBiase, who had never even tagged into the match, was seen berating Andre for his lack luster performance.
WCA Tag Team Championship Tournament round 1 match
Paul London and Brian Kendrick defeated The Mongols via pinfall
This was the classic match up of speed and agility vs. strength and durability. While they won’t be making anyone’s best dressed list, the big Croatian duo was very effective at keeping Paul London isolated from his partner. The Mongols used their size advantage and quick tags to wear down their much smaller opponent. Eventually, however, London was able to make a quick tag to Kendrick, who came in like an erupting volcano of offense. He quickly took control of Bepo, and nailed him with Sliced Bread #2! Only the intervention of Geeto prevented the match from ending right there. London tagged back in, perhaps prematurely considering the beating he had taken, and Bepo retook the advantage. He sent London into the neutral corner, and charged in after him, only to have London leap over the Mongol and pull him to the mat in a pinning combination. Three seconds later the Mongols were stunned and London and Kendrick had moved into the second round.
WCA Tag Team Championship Tournament round 1 match
”Exotic” Adrian Street & Terry “Bam Bam” Gordy defeated “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams via pinfall
Fans were excited about this match up, based largely on the extensive history of Dr. Death and Terry Gordy in Japan. Unfortunately, and much to the displeasure of the fans, neither of those men ever set foot in the ring as this match was over almost as soon as it began. When the bell sounded, Duggan charged Street, who was in his corner talking strategy with Gordy. Street dodged Duggan’s charge, and then quickly rolled up the stunned Glen Falls native. With a handful of tights and a foot on the ropes, Street got a quick 1-2-3 and a stunning victory. Gordy and Street left quickly to a chorus of boos, while an irate Williams and Duggan complained to the referee. The official time of the match was eight seconds.
WCA Tag Team Championship Tournament round 1 match
The James Gang defeated The Love Brothers (with Big Daddy Dink) via pinfall.
The phrase “Instant Classic” is used so often now as to have lost all meaning, but there is no other way to describe this show stealing match. These two exciting duos showed everyone what WCA tag team action is all about! The tremendous back and forth action saw both teams spend their fair share of time on offense. The Love Brothers used text book tag team tactics to work over B.G. James for a time, even scoring a near pinfall with their patented double body slam. When B.G. managed to make the tag to partner Kip, the tables turned and Kip’s amazing athleticism gave the hippie duo fits. Kip nearly scored a victory with his standing leg drop, but Big Daddy Dink got Hartford Love’s foot on the ropes. The action continued to go back and forth like that, until, perhaps sensing that the end was near and looking for a way to put the final nail in the James Gang’s casket, Reginald Love missed badly on a suicide dive out of the ring! He was rolled back into the ring and was then on the receiving end of a James Gang spiked piledriver. The three count was academic as Love was knocked out. As the James Gang celebrated their win, and Big Daddy Dink and Hartford helped Reginald to the back, the fans gave both teams a standing ovation.
Special attraction match
Sky Low Low defeated Little Beaver via pinfall
The men might be small, but the action was supersized when the two best dwarf wrestlers in the world locked horns in the Association ring! The two fought all over the ring and the ringside area as well. While they brawled on the outside of the ring, Sky Low Low whipped Little Beaver into a steel guard rail. Beaver barely made it back into the ring to meet the referee’s count, but he immediately was on the receiving end of Sky Low Low’s legendary drop kick. With that, Sky Low Low picked up the win in an unexpectedly brutal match.
WCA Tag Team Championship Tournament round 2 match
The Mega-Bucks (with Virgil) defeated Paul London and Brian Kendrick via pinfall
Andre the Giant still looked a little worse for wear after his shocking encounter with The Mountie earlier tonight. DiBiase though showed himself to be a rather unsympathetic boss as for the second time tonight, The Million Dollar Man never tagged into the match. London and Kendrick knew they had a tall order ahead of them, in trying to take down the giant, but they gave it their all. Andre was clearly frustrated by the speedy duo, who used their quickness to keep Andre on the defensive, but couldn’t keep him down. The whole match called to mind the scene in King Kong where the Biplanes attack the giant monkey. In the end though, Andre caught Paul London coming of the top rope in a cross body attempt, and power slammed him nearly through the mat for the win! This aggressive streak seemed to finally please DiBiase as he complemented his employee on the victory, but still insisted that the referee raise his own hand.
WCA Tag Team Championship Tournament round 2 match
”Exotic” Adrian Street & Terry “Bam Bam” Gordy defeated The James Gang via pinfall
The story here was endurance. The James Gang, B.G. James in particular, were clearly still gassed from their amazing first round battle with the Love Brothers. Street and Gordy, on the other hand, didn’t even break a sweat in the first round. Kip James was clearly trying to protect his battered partner, but he found himself on the receiving end of a significant amount of punishment. Kip twice barely escaped Street’s daffodil pinning combination, thanks both times to the timely intervention of B.G., but in the end, there was no escaping Gordy’s oriental spike.
Bob Armstrong defeated The Terrible Turk via submission.
This match served as a preview of the WCA Heavyweight Championship tournament, which will begin next week in New Orleans, as these two are among the 16 men who will battle for the Association’s top prize. Youssuf Ishmaelo dominated the early goings in this match with his power, but in the end, Armstrong’s speed and technical expertise was to much for the Terrible one. Armstrong locked in his famous sleeper hold and got the submission victory. Bullet also got some vital momentum that may help him going into the tournament.
WCA Tag Team Championship Tournament final match
The Mega-Bucks (with Virgil) defeated ”Exotic” Adrian Street & Terry “Bam Bam” Gordy via pinfall to become the first ever WCA Tag Team Champions!
The fans didn’t know who to boo more as this one got started, but the fearless way in which Gordy went right after Andre the Giant quickly won them over. For the majority of this match, Street and DiBiase were nothing more the spectators as the eighth wonder of the world and bam bam traded high impact power moves. Eventually, Andre’s size began to wear down Gordy, and the battle became a one-sided affair. Gordy was in desperate need of a tag, but twice Street had been drawn out of their corner chasing Virgil when Gordy got free. Finally though, Gordy was able to get the tag and in came Street to a never before experienced cheer. Street seemed ready to tangle with the big man when, unexpectedly, DiBiase called for a tag! The Million Dollar Man entered the ring for the first time this tournament… He and Street stared each other down in the middle of the ring… DiBiase poked Street in the chest… And Street crumpled to the mat like he’d been shot! DiBiase cockily put a boot on Street’s chest and Bill Alfonso made the fastest three count in human history as an exhausted and shocked Gordy tried to get back into the ring to break it up. The bell sounded, and the crowd began to boo wildly. Gordy grabbed DiBiase by the hair, but before he could do anything more, Street popped back up and hit Gordy with a low blow! With DiBiase directing traffic, Virgil and Street laid a beating on Gordy, then held him down while Andre delivered a devastating big splash! Andre was going for a second splash, when a cheer went up from the crowd. The Mountie, Brad Armstrong, and Dr. Death hit the ring to chase off villains and prevent them from doing any further harm to the helpless Gordy. DiBiase hightailed it out of the ring, stopping just long enough to grab both championship belts. Dr. Death clothslined Street over the top rope, Armstrong drop kicked Virgil out of the ring, and Andre turned tail and ran at the sight of The Mountie’s shock stick. While Armstrong and Williams tended to the fallen Gordy and The Mountie kept watch with his shock stick, DiBiase and his cohorts celebrated in the aisle, laughing all the way to the back.
*An inauspicious beginnings to the Association as the first ever champions are tainted with controversy. Will DiBiase be satisfied with just the tag team gold, or does he have designs on controlling all of the WCA? We’ll find out next week when The Association débuts in New Orleans.
*The Human Performance Center, affectionately known as The Chamber of Horrors, will be the sight of the first four matches in the WCA Heavyweight title tournament. Bob Armstrong, coming off his victory tonight, will take on The Destroyer. Greg “The Hammer” Valentine will battle Bob Orton Sr. Ray Stevens will tangle with The Iron Sheik. And in the match that will also be your main event, Bruiser Brody and King Kong Bundy will collide!
* In addition to tournament action, several matches have been signed as a result of tonight. The Mountie will take on Virgil one on one, while his tag team partner Brad Armstrong will take on Exotic Adrian Street. Plus, Little Beaver will join forces with Al Snow to take on Sky Low Low and Justin Credible in a mixed tag team match.
